When it comes to acquiring words, the ones derived from stories

are always easier for me to understand and remember.

단어를 습득할 때, 이야기에서 유래된 단어를 이해하고 기억하는 것이

저에겐 훨씬 쉬웠습니다.

I am not sure what others would say about that,

but I believe most people feel the same

because human beings love a story in almost all of its forms.

다른 분들을 어떨지 모르겠지만,

사람들은 거의 모든 형태의 이야기를 좋아하기 때문에,

많은 분들이 저와 비슷하게 느끼실 것 같습니다. .   

A story, most of all, is intriguing and also easy for readers

to relate themselves to its characters and content.

무엇보다도, 이야기는 재미있으며, 독자들이

스스로를 이야기 속 등장인물과 내용에 관련시키기 쉽습니다.  

Thus, when we read or listen to a story,

we personalize it as our own, immersing ourselves into its plot

and emotions of its characters.

그래서, 우리가 어떤 이야기를 읽거나 들을 때,

그 이야기를 우리의 것으로 개인화 시키고,

등장인물의 감정이나 줄거리에 흠뻑 빠지게 됩니다.  

This enables us to understand and remember more about the story.

그럼으로써 우리는 이야기를 이해하며, 그 이야기에 대해 더 많이 기억하게 됩니다.

Regarding that, it seems natural to me that we find it a lot easier

to acquire a word which stemmed from a story.

이런 점들을 고려했을 때, 이야기로부터 비롯된 단어를

습득하기 훨씬 쉬운 건 너무 당연한 일입니다.

 

The verb, tantalize, which will be dealt in this post,

is also a word derived from a story, specifically a Greek myth.

이 게시물에서 다루게 될 “tantalize”라는 동사 또한 이야기,

정확히 그리스 신화에서 유래된 단어입니다.

The verb, tantalize, consists of two parts:

Latin Tantalus + -ize (word-forming element used to make verb).

동사 “tantalize”는 두 부분으로 이루어져 있습니다.

라틴어 Tantalus와 동사를 만들기 위해서 사용되는 요소인 –ize 입니다.

 

Here, Tantalus is a character in Greek mythology.

여기서 Tantalus는 그리스 신화에 나오는 등장인물 입니다.

Tantalus was a king of ancient Phrygia (or Sipylus),

who made a grave mistake of offending the gods.

Tantalus는 Phrygia (또는 Sipylus)의 왕이었고, 신

들의 분노를 사는 심각한 실수를 저질렀습니다.

There are various versions of stories regarding how Tantalus enraged the gods.

Tantalus가 어떻게 신들을 화나게 했는지에 대해서는 다양한 형태의 이야기들이 있습니다.

Some stories tell that Tantalus merely revealed the secrets of the gods with humans,

and others stated that he slaughtered his son, Pelops.

어떤 이야기에서는 Tantalus가 인간들에게 신들의 비밀을 공개했다고 하고,

다른 이야기에서는 그기 자신의 아들 Pelops를 살해했다고 합니다.

 

Unlike the sin Tantalus committed, there is a consistency in the punishment he got.

Tantalus가 저지른 죄와는 달리, 그가 받은 벌에 대해서는 일관성이 있습니다.

When the deceased Tantalus was coerced to stand up in the pond

where there was some fruit hanging over his head, seemingly close enough for him to pick.

사망한 Tantalus는 강제로 연못 안에 서 있게 되는데,

얼핏 보기엔 그가 충분히 딸 수 있을 것 같은 과일이 그의 머리에 달려 있습니다. 

Yet, whenever he reached for the fruit to eat, the fruit always became out of his reach.

그러나 그가 과일을 먹으려고 손을 뻗으면, 그 과일은 항상 그의 손에 닿지 않았다.

Also, even though he stood in the pond, he couldn’t even take a sip of water

since the pond withdrew from him.

거기에 더해, 비록 그가 연못 안에 서 있지만, 물을 단 한 모금도 마실 수 없었는데

연못이 그를 피해 물러났기 때문입니다.

Can you imagine what Tantalus felt when he could neither eat the fruit

nor drink from the water eternally no matter how he wanted to?

아무리 원한다 해도 영원히 과일을 먹지도 물을 마시지도 못할 때

Tantalus가 어떤 심정이었을지 상상하실 수 있나요?

I bet he was extremely frustrated and angry.

제 생각에 그는 극도로 좌절하고 화가 났을 것 같은데요.

Actually, the verb, tantalize, is related to what Tantalus felt.

실제로, 동사인 tantalize는 Tantalus의 감정과 관련이 있습니다.

Of course, he was desperate, but is that all?

물론 그는 정말적이었을 겁니다. 그런데 그게 전부였을까요? 

No, we have to think about what made him feel dejected.

아닙니다. 우리는 실제로 그를 낙담하게 만든 것이 무엇인지에 대해 생각해봐야 합니다.

He tried to consume fruit and water, both of which he longed to get, but could not have.

그는 과일과 물을 먹고 마시려고 했죠, 그 두 가지는 그가 가지길 열망했지만 가질 수 없던 것들입니다.

Then, what kind of emotion did he have toward them?

그렇다면, 그 과일과 물에 대해 그는 어떤 감정을 품고 있었을까요?

Yes, we almost get really close to the two meanings of “tantalize.” .

맞아요. 우리는 tantalize의 두 가지 의미에 아주 가깝게 접근했어요.

 

Keeping what we’ve discussed in mind, let’s see

what the dictionary says about the verb, tantalize.

우리가 논했던 것을 명심하고, 실제로 동사 tantalize의 사전적인 의미를 봅시다.

 

tantalize: 1. to tease or torment by or as if by presenting something desirable

to the view but continually keeping it out of reach;

2. to be strongly attractive to; excite the senses or desire of

“tantalize”의 첫 번째 의미는 직역하면, “바람직한/가치가 있는 것을 보여주지만

그것이 계속 손에 닿지 않도록 해서 역을 올리거나 고통을 주다.”이고

두 번째 의미는 ‘~에 강한 매력을 느끼다; 감각이나 욕구를 자극하다”입니다.

영한 사전을 보면, “~을 애타게 하여 괴롭히다, 감질나게 하다, ~을 보여주어 감질나게 하다”이고 

2번째 의미는 잘 다루고 있지 않습니다.

사전에 제시된 예문 정도에서 비슷한 의미가 나옵니다.

“유혹하다, ~에 매력을 느끼다, ~을 자극하다” 정도의 의미로 해석하시면 됩니다.
