I believe that, though not really sure, I first came across this word “reverie”

while reading a book written for ages 8-12.

확신할 수는 없지만, 제 생각엔 저는 이 “reverie”라는 단어를

8세~12세 대상으로 쓰여진 책에서 처음 본 것 같습니다. 

 

I honestly thought the word “reverie” was a little bit too difficult for students in such age ranges

since I did not really know its meaning at that time.

(I heavily relied on contest to guess its meaning.)

솔직히 저는 “reverie”라는 그 단어가 그 나이대의 학생들에게는 약간 어렵다고 생각했는데,

제가 그 단어의 뜻을 그때 잘 알지 못했기 때문입니다.

(그 단어의 뜻을 알기 위해서 문맥에 많이 의존했었죠.)

 

Being quite disappointed for not knowing a word in the book for ages 8-12,

I almost made a bigger mistake of regarding “reverie” as one of really rare vocabularies.

8세~12세를 위한 책에 나온 단어를 몰랐다는 데 꽤나 실망해서,

저는 “reverie”를 잘 나오지 않는 단어들 중 하나라고 생각하는 더 큰 실수를 할 뻔 했습니다.

 

However, it turned out that “reverie” is a quite frequent vocabulary on the SAT, ACT, GRE, and TOEFL,

all of which are tests in English according to Vocabulary.com.

그렇지만, Vocabulary.com에 따르면, “reverie”는 영어로 된 시험인 SAT, ACT, GRE와 TOEFL에

꽤나 자주 나오는 단어라고 합니다.

 

Well then…how come I haven’t had any idea about this vocabulary?

그렇다면.. 대체 어떻게 이 단어를 제가 몰랐을까요?

 

Maybe, it is possible that I’ve somehow forgotten “reverie”

even if I had learned and studied it.

아마도, 제가 “reverie”를 배우고 공부했음에도 불구하고,

어쩌다 잊어버렸을 가능성도 있죠.

 

Yet, I did believe I really hadn’t seen “reverie”

at least on some of above-mentioned tests I’d taken.

그렇지만, 저는 적어도 위에서 언급된 시험들 중 제가 봤던 몇몇 시험에서는

확실히 “reverie”를 본적이 없습니다.

 

Actually, I believe I was really lucky for taking exams without showing my lack of vocabulary,

at least for “reverie.”

사실, 적어도 “reverie”에 관해서는 제 어휘 능력이 부족하다는 것을 보이지 않고

시험을 칠 수 있었던 건 정말 행운이라고 생각합니다. 

 

Also, at the same time, I feel very ashamed that I thought this word, “reverie,”was not an important word

just because I hadn’t read it before.

또한 동시에,  단지 내가 읽어 본 적이 없다는 이유만으로 “reverie”라는 단어는 중요하지 않다고 생각한

스스로에 대해 아주 창피했습니다.

 

Even though I tried to read a lot in English, but I have never thought I read enough.

제가 영어로 독서를 많이 하려고 노력하긴 하지만, 충분하다고 생각해 본적은 없었습니다.

 

Then, how could I feel that way toward the word I didn’t know?

그렇다면 어떻게 제가 모르는 단어에 대해 그런 식으로 생각할 수 있었을까요?

 

Perhaps, I had too much confidence in the amount of my reading at that time,

which I don’t have these days thankfully.

아마도, 저는 그 당시에 제 독서량에 대해 지나친 자신감을 가졌던 것 같습니다,

다행이 지금은 아닙니다만..

 

Now, let’s learn about the word “reverie,” at least not to be both stupid and arrogant like me

for thinking something I do not know is not important.

적어도, 제가 모르는 건 중요한 게 아니다 라고 생각했던 멍청하고 건방진 저처럼 되지 않기 위해서

이제,  reverie에 대해 알아보겠습니다.

 

reverie (n.): 1. daydream; 2. the condition of being lost in thought

reverie는 명사이고요, 두 가지 뜻이 있습니다. 

직역하면 “1. 백일몽, 몽상, 2. 생각/사색에 잠겨 있는/골몰한 상태”라는 의미입니다.

영한사전을 보시면 “1. 백일몽, 몽상, 2. 사색, 생각” 정도로 나와 있는데요.

2번째 의미의 경우, 영영사전에 제시된 것처럼 “생각/사색에 잠겨있는/골몰한 상태”라는

의미로 해석하는 것이 더 문맥에 맞을 경우가 있으니 참고하셔요

“Hello!” Jessie said, waving her hands in front of Isa’s face.

“Moving? The Beiderman?” “Whoa,” said Allegra.

“Who’s moving? What Beiderman?”

Isa snapped out of her reverie and looked at Allegra,

“We are moving. The Beiderman is our landlord, and he isn’t renewing our lease.”

Isa는 거울 속의 각각 다른 각도에서 비치는 자신의 모습에 감탄하며 “그래”라고 꿈을 꾸듯 말했다.

그녀의 나무랄 데 없는 포즈는 마치 그녀가 카네기 홀의 무대를 위한 준비를 마친 것처럼 보이게 했다.

Jessie는 Isa의 얼굴 앞쪽에 손을 흔들며 “이봐!”라고 말했다.

“우리가 이사 갈거야. Beiderman은 우리 집주인이고, 그는 우리의 임대계약을 갱신해주지 않을 거야.”
