그럼, 질문을 다시 해 보겠습니다: 어떤 언어로든 글을 잘 쓸 수 있는 최고의 방법은?
대답은 지극히 간단합니다: 모방. 이것은 유명작가들을 포함해서,
글쓰기를 가르치는 대다수의 사람들이 주장한 것입니다.
그 중에서 저는 세계적인 베스트셀러이자 글쓰기 책의 고전인
“On Writing Well (한국어판: 글쓰기 생각쓰기)”를 쓴 윌리엄 진서가
그의 다른 책인 “Writing to Learn (한국어 판: 공부가 되는 글쓰기)”에서 강조한 말을 인용하고자 합니다.
제가 언급한 윌리엄 진서의 책 두 권은 정말 훌륭한 책입니다만,
저는 “Writing to Learn”쪽을 더 좋아하는 데요,
그 책이 좀 더 글쓰기와 공부 간의 관계를 좀 더 집중적으로 다루고 있기 때문입니다.
Let me repeat the question: What is the best way to write in any language?
The answer is insanely simple: Imitation. This is what the majority of people,
who teach writing, including many acclaimed writers themselves, claim.
Among all of them, I’d like to quote what William Zinsser,
the author of the international bestseller and one of the classics on writing “On Writing Well,”
stressed in his another book titled, “Writing to Learn.”
Actually, both books mentioned above are really great, but what I do love more is the latter one
since that book focuses more on relationship between writing and learning.
어떻게 하면 글을 잘 쓰는 방법을 배울 수 있을까? 라는 점에 관해
윌리엄 진서가 서술한 것을 그대로 인용해 보겠습니다.
“글쓰기는 모방으로 배우는 것이다. 나는 주로 내가 쓰려는 종류의 글을 쓴 작가들의 글을 읽고,
그들이 어떤 방식으로 글을 썼는가를 알아내려 노력하면서 내 글을 쓰는 법을 배웠다.
S.J. Perelman (S.J. 피렐먼, 미국의 휴머리스트)이 처음 글을 쓸 때
그는 자신이 Ring Lardner (링 라드너, 미국의 작가)를 모방한 걸로
체포될 수도 있는 수준이었다고 내게 말했다.
Woody Allen (우디 알렌, 미국의 영화감독, 작가)도
S.J. Perelman을 모방한 걸로 체포될 수 있을 정도였다.

Let me quote what William Zinsser wrote about learning how to write well.
“Writing is learned by imitation.
I learned to write mainly by reading writers who were doing the kind of writing I wanted to do
and by trying to figure out how they did it.
S.J. Perelman told me that when he was starting out, he could have been arrested for imitating Ring Lardner.
Woody Allen could have been arrested for imitating S.J. Perelman.
And who hasn’t tried to imitate Wood Allen?”
이 부분을 읽었을 때, 나는 글쓰기를 배우는데 있어 가장 기본적인 진실을 말해준 윌리엄 진서에게
기립박수라도 치고 싶은 심정이었다.
어떤 언어로 글을 쓰던지 자신이 쓰고 싶은 것을 유려하게 표현하고 있는 샘플을 읽고 흉내내지 않는다면,
어떻게 글을 잘 쓸 수 있을까? 좋은 샘플을 읽고 모방하지 않는다면 절대 불가능하다!
심지어 모국어로 글을 쓴다 해도 불가능하다.
모든 모국어 사용자가 모국어로 글을 잘 쓰지 못하는 것처럼,
모국어로 글을 쓴다는 것이 글을 잘 쓸 수 있는 필요 충분 조건은 아니다.
When I read that, I felt like giving him a standing ovation
for telling the very basic truth in learning to write.
How can you write well (in whatever language) without reading and mimicking writing samples—the ones
that you wish to write as much eloquently as they’ve been written.
Absolutely not without reading and imitating good sample!
Even writing in your own language, you cannot write well without doing so.
Just as not every native speaker is a good writer in his own language,
writing in your mother tongue is not a necessary and sufficient condition for good writing.
좋은 글쓰기 샘플을 읽고 모방하는 동안, 마음속에 의심이 생길 수 있다.
대부분의 경우, 그런 의심은 다른 사람들이 쓴 글을 모방하는 데서 오는 죄책감이다.
그렇게 하는 것이 표절이라고 생각할 수도 있는데, 이 부분에 대해 명확하게 얘기해 보겠다.
이미 쓰여진 글을 모방한다는 것은 글자 하나 하나를 그대로 베끼라는 것이 아니다.
사실상,글자 하나 하나를 그대로 베끼는 것은 불가능한데, 근본적으로 대부분의 경우,
라이팅 샘플이 당신이 쓰고 싶어하는 내용과 똑같을 수는 없다.
그리고, 만약 어떤 문장들이 당신이 쓰려는 내용과 완전히 같다고 해도,
반드시 다른 말로 바꾸어 표현하기를 해야 하는데,
인용한 부분을 밝히지 않거나 인용부호 없이 참고한 문장과 똑같은 단어를 5개 이상 쓰는 것은 표절이기 때문이다.
While indeed reading and imitating good writing samples to write your own,
there could be doubts in your mind.
Most of them are related to your feeling guilty on imitating something written by others.
You might regard it plagiarism. Well, let me clarify this.
Imitating something written doesn’t mean you copy it word for word.
Actually copying word for word is, in most cases, basically impossible
since there will be no writing samples written exactly what you want to write.
Also, if there are some sentences describing what you really want to write,
you still have to paraphrase since copying word for word for more than five words
in a sentence from which you modeled without a quotation mark and the citation is really plagiarism.
그러나, 좋은 샘플을 적절한 인용과 말 바꿔 쓰기를 사용해서 모방해서 표절은 아니라 해도,
글 전체가 자신만의 창작물이 아니라는 생각에 무엇인가 잘못되었다라고 생각할 수는 있다.
그런 경우에 대해 윌리엄 진서가 뭐라고 했는지를 소개하겠다.
“다른 사람의 글을 모델로 하는 것에 대해 학생들은 빈번하게 죄책감을 느끼기도 한다.
그들은 그런 식으로 자신들의 글을 쓰는 것이 비윤리적인 일이라고 생각하는데, 이것은 칭찬 받을 만한 일이다.
또한, 학생들은 스스로의 정체성을 잃게 되지 않을까 걱정을 하기도 한다.
그러나, 중요한 점은, 우리는 결국에는 우리의 모델을 넘어서게 된다는 것이다. "

Yet, even if it is not plagiarism to imitate good writing samples with proper quotation and paraphrase,
you might still feel there’s something wrong in your writing since it is not wholly your own creation.
In that case, let me quote what William Zinsser wrote about this.
“Students often feel guilty about modeling their writing on someone else’s writing.
They think it’s unethical—which is commendable.
Or they’re afraid they’ll lose their identity.
The point, however, is that we eventually move beyond our models.....”
