Rematch (재시합)

 

The story, "Rematch," is the first short story from “One More Thing: Stories & Other Stories

written by B.J. Novak.

이 “재시합”이라는 이야기는 B.J. Novak이 쓴 “한 가지 더: 이야기들 & 다른 이야기들”의

첫 번째 단편입니다.

 

I believe all of you know “the Hare and the Tortoise,” a fable by Aesop.

This short story is a twist of that fable.

여러분 모두 이솝 우화인 “토끼와 거북이”를 아실 겁니다.

이 단편은 그 “토끼와 거북이”를 비틀어 쓴 것입니다.

 

Imagine you’re the hare who was beaten in a match by the tortoise.

당신이 거북이와의 시합에서 패한 토끼라고 상상해봅시다.

The hare became traumatized by its defeat since everyone knew about the race

and even the future generations would learn it through textbooks.

토끼는 자신의 패배에 엄청난 충격을 받았는데 모든 사람들이 그 경주를 알고

심지어 미래 세대들도 그 경주를 교과서에서 배울 것이기 때문이다.

And, to make it worse, nobody remembered that the hare had took six naps during the match.

게다가, 설상가상으로, 어느 누구도 토끼가 시합 중에 6번이나 낮잠을 잔 것을 기억하지 못했다.

Thus, in order to shed its trauma from the defeat, the hare did everything that seemed helpful.

그래서, 패배로 인한 트라우마에서 벗어나기 위해, 토끼는 도움이 될 것 같은 것은 무엇이든 다했다.

Then the hare came to realize that the only way for it to get over its trauma is rematch

so that it called the spokesperson of the tortoise, which was busy giving lectures on dedication

and perseverance to children and even building “the Slow and Steady Foundation.”

(That was because there was no way for the hare to directly contact the tortoise, a celebrity.) 

그러다가, 토끼는 자신의 트라우마를 극복하는 유일한 방법은 재시합이라는 것을 깨닫고

전념과 인내에 대해 어린이들에게 강의를 하며 심지어는 “천천히 그리고 꾸준히” 재단까지 설립한

거북이의 대변인에게 전화를 했다.

(유명인사인 거북이에게 토끼가 직접적으로 연락할 방법은 없었기 때문이었다.) 

 

The tortoise’s spokesperson rejected the hare’s suggestion for rematch,

saying that the tortoise would like to concentrate on the future.

거북이의 대변인은 거북이가 미래에 집중하기를 원한다고 말하면서

토끼의 재시합 제안을 거절했다.

Being furious by the tortoise's rejection and at the same time realizing there was too much at stake

for the tortoise to accept the rematch, the hare decided to take a different approach.

거북이의 거절에 분노했지만, 동시에 재시합을 받아들이기엔 거북이에게는 너무나 많은 것들이

걸려 있다는 것을 깨닫고, 토끼는 다른 접근법을 쓰기로 결심했다.

 

The hare started training for the rematch and while it was running, it talked to everyone whom he met,

asking whether they wanted to see the rematch between it and the tortoise.

토끼는 재시합을 위한 훈련에 돌입했으며, 달리는 동안 마주치는 모든 사람들에게

자신과 거북이의 재시합을 원하냐고 물었다.

As more and more people started talking about the rematch,

the tortoise could not ignore the idea of rematch any more.

점점 더 많은 사람들이 재시합에 대해 이야기하기 시작하자,

거북이는 더 이상 재시합에 대한 생각을 무시할 수 없었다.

 

At first, the tortoise rejected the rematch in public, which backfired to it

as a lot more people started talking about the rematch.

초반에, 거북이는 공개적으로 재시합을 거절했는데,

이것은 더 많은 사람들이 재시합에 대해 말하게 되는 역효과를 가져왔다.

Then, finally, the tortoise accepted the rematch and the hare really trained intensely.

그 다음에, 결국, 거북이는 재시합을 받아들였고 토끼는 정말 열심히 훈련을 했다.

 

On the day of the race, the hare gave all its heart and strength and the result was…..

(No more spoilers…).

시합날, 토끼는 심혈을 기울였고 결과는…

Even after the rematch, people, who didn’t know about the first race,

could not understand why the rematch was important.

재시합 이후에도 첫 시합에 관해서 모르는 사람들은

왜 재시합이 중요한지를 알지 못했다.

 

Those who knew it understood what they had seen:

“Slow and steady wins the race, till truth and talent claim their place.”

첫 시합을 아는 사람들은 자신들이 본 것을 이해했다: “천천히 꾸준하게 하면 경주에서 이긴다,

진실과 재능이 자기 자리를 차지하기 전엔. (진실과 재능이 천천히 꾸준하게 보다 중요하다)

 

Well, this story is very short, but funny and brilliant.

이 이야기는 짧지만, 아주 재미있고, 훌륭합니다.

 

What makes me really impressed was the last sentence, the underlined one,

which I write it verbatim.

제게 가장 인상 깊었던 것은 밑줄이 쳐진 마지막 문장인데,

이건 글자 그대로 썼습니다.

That sentence was a quite painful truth presented with a rather cynical and yet humorous tone.

그 문장은 약간 냉소적이지만 유머스러운 어조로 나타낸 꽤나 고통스러운 진실입니다.

 

I also like the author's mention about the ones who didn't know about the first match

since it shows a simple truth: what it matters to me, however important it is, doesn't always 

have such gravity to others. 

저자가 첫 번째 시합을 모르는 사람에 대해 언급한 부분도 저는 좋았는데요, 그 부분이 

"나한테 아무리 중요한 것이라도, 그게 항상 다른사람에게도 중요한 건 아니다"라는

단순한 진리를 보여주기 때문입니다.   

 

Overall, I think what the author wrote was a very good (and realistic) story of what happened

after the famous race between the hare and the tortoise.

전반적으로, 저는 그 유명한 토끼와 거북이의 경주 뒤에

무슨 일이 일어났는지를 저자가 아주 좋은 (그리고 현실적인) 이야기로 써냈다고 생각합니다.
