 Gwendy’s Button Box is a novella written by Stephen King and Richard Chizmar.

그웬디의 버튼 상자는 스티븐 킹과 리처드 치즈마가 공동집필한 짧은 소설입니다.

 

This story is about Gwendy, a teenage girl, met a mysterious man who introduced him 

as Mr. Ferris and gave a button box to her. 

Mr. Ferris also explained what happened to Gwendy if she pushed each of six buttons 

or pull each of two levers.

이것은 자신을 페리스 씨라고 소개한 신비한 남자에게서 버튼 상자를 받은 

그웬디라는 십대 소녀에 관한 이야기입니다.

페리스 씨는 그웬디가 버튼 상자에 있는 총 6개의 버튼과 2개의 레버들을 각각 누르거나 

당기면 어떤 일이 일어날지를 설명해줍니다.

 

The button box had very strong and mysterious power and even one of its buttons 

possessed the power to destroy the entire world.

Thus, at first Gwendy refused to take the box, a really reasonable response, 

but Mr. Ferris told her that she was designated to take a good care of box 

until he would come back and take it back.

그 버튼 상자는 강력하고 신비로운 힘을 가졌고 버튼 하나는

심지어 전 세계를 파괴할 힘을 보유하고 있습니다.

그래서 처음에는, 아주 이성적인 반응으로 그웬디는 그 버튼 상자를 받지 않으려 했지만, 

Mr. Ferris는 그가 다시 돌아와서 그 버튼 상자를 가져갈 때까지 그녀가 그 버튼 상자를 맡아서 

잘 관리하게끔 정해져 있다고 말합니다.

 

What would you do if you were given such a button box?

The button box surely overwhelms you and as a result you would dread the box.

Yet, at the same time, is the fear the only feeling you have toward the box 

if it gives you rewards for keeping it?

What if the box’s rewards are solutions to your problems 

(in case of Gwendy, magic treats that helps her slim down) and occasional silver coins, 

each of which valued about hundred dollars?

만약 당신이 그런 버튼 상자를 받게 된다면 무엇을 하실 건가요?

그 버튼 상자는 당신을 압도할 것이고 당신은 그 상자를 두려워하게 될 것입니다.

하지만, 그 상자를 맡아주는 대가로 당신에게 보상이 지급된다면, 

당신은 그 상자에 대해 공포감만을 갖게 될까요?

만약 그 상자가 주는 보상이 당신의 문제들에 대한 해결책

(그웬디의 경우엔 살이 빠지게 도와주는 마법 같은 간식)과 

가끔씩 대략 수백 달러의 가치가 있는 은화들이라면요?

 

Well, if that’s the case, fear is not the only emotion you have toward the button box. 

Even still frightened with it, you might start a bit liking it.

You find the button box very helpful since you are actually getting healthier

and more intelligent after you received it.

Then, you might become more and more dependent on that box 

despite your underlying and instinctual fear of it. 

That’s what happened to Gwendy.

음… 그런 경우라면, 당신은 박스에 대해 두려움만을 갖지는 않을 것입니다. 

심지어 여전히 버튼 박스를 무서워하신다고 해도, 약간은 그 박스를 좋아하게 될 것입니다.

그 버튼 박스를 받은 후 실제로 당신이 더 건강해지고 총명해졌기 때문에, 

당신은 그 박스가 아주 유용하다는 생각할 것입니다.t

그러다 보니 그 버튼 박스에 대한 당신의 근본적이고 본능적인 두려움에도 불구하고 

당신은 점점 더 그 박스에 의존하게 될 것입니다. 

그게 바로 그웬디에게 일어난 일이죠.    

 

Is Gwendy’s dependence on the button box all we have to worry about? 

The answer is definitely no.

그웬디의 버튼박스에 대한 의존성, 그것만이 문제가 되는 걸까요?

대답은 절대로 아니다 입니다.

 

What about greed and curiosity?

탐욕과 호기심은 어떨까요?

 

On the former, Gwendy was amazing. 

She neither sought more silver coins nor spent them recklessly.

She just kept them or sold some of them for college. 

(I don’t really think about what I would do with the button box to get more money. 

I know I would never be satisfied with the occasional gains……)

전자인 탐욕에 관해서라면, 그웬디는 대단해요. 

그녀는 더 많은 은화들을 원하거나 그 은화들을 무모하게 쓰지 않았습니다.

그녀는 단지 대학진학을 위해 그 은화들을 모아두거나 일부를 팔았죠. 

(더 많은 돈을 얻기 위해 제가 버튼 박스에 무슨 짓을 했을지 상상하고 싶지 않네요. 

저라면 가끔씩 얻는 수입에 절대 만족하지 못했을 겁니다)

 

Regarding the latter, I think Gwendy also did quite a good job, 

but she was also a human being.

Thus, she wondered what would happen if she pushed a red button, 

which was the only button she was allowed to push repeatedly.

후자인 호기심에 관해서도, 저는 그웬디가 상당히 잘했다고 생각하지만, 

그녀 역시 인간이니까요.

그러다 보니, 그녀는 여러 차례 누를 수 있다고 허락받은 빨간 버튼을 

누르면 무슨 일이 일어날까를 궁금해하게 됩니다.

 

Though she had chosen the place where she had imagined that would cause the least harm 

by pushing one of the six buttons each representing a continent and pushed the red button, 

what happened after she pushed those two buttons really shocked her and even haunted her.

6개의 대륙을 나타내는 버튼들 중 그녀가 생각하기엔 가장 피해가 적을 것 같은 곳을 선택하고 

빨간 버튼을 눌르긴 했지만, 그 두 개의 버튼을 누른 후 일어난 일에 그녀는 충격을 받게되고 

심지어는 그 일에 대해 끊임없이 괴로워 합니다. .  

 

After that incident, Gwendy got more cautious about taking care of 

or rather possessing the button box, contemplating how much influence the box exerted in her life 

and wondering without it whether she achieved that much.

She became independent from the box and continued doing well, 

though being afraid of losing her ability and achievements without the help of the button box 

and even facing the deaths of her once-close-but-estranged friend and her first boyfriend.

그 사건 이후로, 그웬디는 버튼 박스를 관리한다는 것, 또는 그것을 소유하고 있다는 것에 대해 더 조심스러워졌고, 

실제로 그 박스가 그녀의 인생에 미친 영향력에 대해 심사숙고 하며 

만일 그 박스가 없었다면 그녀가 많은 것을 성취할 수 있었을까를 고민하게 됩니다.

비록 버튼 박스의 도움 없이는 그녀의 능력이나 성취를 잃게 되지 않을까 두려워하면서도, 

또 한 때 친했으나 멀어졌던 친구의 죽음 그리고 첫 남자친구의 죽음을 하면서도, 

그녀는 박스로부터 독립하고 계속 잘해나가게 됩니다.

 

Then story tells a little bit about her college graduation 

and describes the return of Mr. Ferris who gave Gwendy the box.

Mr. Ferris told Gwendy that she had taken good care of the box 

and he answered her questions regarding her life and the box. 

Then, he disappeared with the box.

그 이후, 이 소설은 그웬디의 대학 졸업에 대해 약간 언급하고 

그녀에게 상자를 주었던 페리스씨의 귀환에 대해 서술합니다.

페리스 씨는 그웬디가 버튼 박스를 잘 관리했다고 말하고 

그녀의 인생과 박스에 대한 질문들에 대답을 해준 후 박스와 함께 사라집니다.

 

Although both the button box and Mr. Ferris, who gave it to Gwendy, were mysterious

and somewhat frightening,  this novella is not that much horror-evoking 

as most of Stephen King’s other stories.

Rather, this one is more like a story about growing up—surely, the button box is too freaky 

to be used in a sort of coming-of-age novel.

버튼 박스와 그웬디에게 박스를 준 페리스 씨, 둘 다 신비롭고 약간은 두려운 존재이긴 합니다만, 

이 짧은 소설은 스티븐 킹의 다른 작품들 대부분처럼 공포를 불러일으키지는 않습니다.

외려, 이 짧은 소설은 성장에 대한 이야기입니다. 

물론 버튼 박스가 성장소설이라는 종류에 쓰기엔 많이 기이하기는 합니다만.

 

More precisely, I think this is a story of a girl to become a good and responsible adult.

Gwendy had never been neither too greedy to acquire more rewards from the button box 

nor too weak to be totally rely on its power.

좀 더 정확히 하자면, 저는 이 소설은 선하고 책임감 있는 어른이 되는 한 소녀에 관한 이야기라고 생각합니다.

그웬디는 버튼 박스로부터 더 많은 보상을 얻어내려 할 만큼 탐욕스럽지도 

박스의 힘에 전적으로 의존할 만큼 연약하지도 않았습니다.

 

Also, she became totally independent from the mysterious, somewhat evil, 

yet very tempting and strong power of the button box, making her achievements 

with its help real accomplishments of her own.

그리고, 그웬디는 신비롭고 어느 정도 사악하지만 아주 유혹적이고 강한 버튼 박스의 힘으로부터 

완전히 독립하고 박스의 도움으로 이루어낸 성취를 그녀 스스로의 힘으로 이루어낸 성취로 만들어냅니다.  

 

Moreover, she willingly gave up the button box along with its power without any resistance, 

handing it to Mr. Ferris upon his return.

게다가, 페리스씨가 돌아왔을 때 그녀는 어떤 저항도 없이 버튼 박스와 

박스의 힘을 기꺼이 포기하고 그에게 박스를 넘깁니다.  

 

I wonder whether I could escape from the button box's power like Gwendy after experiencing it, 

even though I already know I should neither become intoxicated by its power nor own it eternally.

제가 아무리 버튼 박스의 힘에 중독되어서는 안 된다는 걸, 그리고 그 박스를 영원히 소유할 수는 없다는 걸 

알고 있다해도, 과연 그 박스의 힘을 경험한 후에 그웬디처럼 벗어날 수 있었을지는 잘 모르겠습니다.
