Bad Body, (the first short story of You Know You Want This)

 

최근, Kriten Roupenian이 쓴 “알쟎아, 네가 이걸 원했다는 걸.” 이라는 제목의 단편 소설집을 샀다.

“Cat People” 이라는 그녀의 단편 소설이 많은 찬사를 받았고, 그 소설의 성공으로 인해

“알쟎아, 네가 이걸 원했다는 걸”은 많은 유명잡지들로부터 2019년 가장 기대되는 책들 중
하나로 지목되었다.

 I recently bought a book with the title,“You Know You Want This,” a collection of short stories
written by Kristen Roupenian. Kristen was very highly acclaimed for her short novel, “Cat People,”
and its success led “You Know You Want This” to be named one of the most expected books
in 2019 by many famous magazines.

 

솔직히, 이 책을 향한 열성적인 찬사를 좀 의심하긴 했지만, 이 책에 다행이 수록되어 있는
“Cat People”이 영화화된다는 소식에 (영화화된 책들을 다 믿거나 좋아하진 않지만, 왠지 당시엔 사야 할 것 같아서)
책을 구매하게 되었다.   

Frankly speaking, I had my doubt on such enthusiastic compliments for this book,
yet I bought it anyway because I read the news that “Cat People,”thankfully included in the book,
was to be made into a movie. (Not that I trust and enjoy all filmed books, but at that time I felt
I needed to purchase it.)

 

“나쁜 아이”는 단편집의 첫 번째 소설이다. 한 커플과, 끔찍한 여자친구와 방금 헤어진
그들의 친구에 관한 이야기이다. 슬픔과 절망에 빠진 친구는 커플의 아파트에 예상보다 오래 머물게 된다.
자연스럽게 커플은 그 친구의 존재를 불편하게 여기게 된다. 그래서 커플은 마치 그 친구가 없는 것처럼
행동하지만, 그는 전혀 동요하지도, 당황하지도 않는다.  

“Bad Boy” is the first short novel of the collection. This story tells of three people, a couple
and their friend who just broke up with his awful girlfriend. Being really in grief and despair,
he stayed in the couple’s apartment longer than the couple expected,
and naturally the couple came to feel uncomfortable in his presence.
So, they tried to nudge him to go back to his apartment by acting like they assumed him
being not there, but he didn’t budge and was never embarrassed.

 

그들 모두가 심하게 취했던 어느 날 밤, 상황이 바뀌기 시작했다. 커플은 그와 이상한 관계로 발전하게 된다:
초기에, 그 관계는 전부 친구를 정상적인 삶으로 돌아가게 하기 위한 것이었다—커플이 친구에게
명령을 내리긴 하지만, 약간은 친구의 부모처럼 행동했다.
그러나 이런 관계는 친구가 몰래 끔찍한 여자친구와 연락을 계속하고 있었다는 것이 밝혀지며 끝난다.
그 사실을 발견하고, 커플은 친구를 심하게 혼내고, 그에게 강압적으로 변하기 시작한다—
일종의 주종관계 (커플이 주인이고 친구가 종인)같은 그런 관계로.
그 순간부터 상황은 걷잡을 수 없게 되는데, 그들은 친구에게 못되고 잔인하게 굴고,
집착하며, 완벽하게 통제하려 하는데, 친구는 그들에게 진심으로 복종하지 않는다.. 

One night, when all of them got drunk, things got changed.
The couple sort of developed an odd relationship with him: At the very beginning,
it was just all for helping him back to normal life—the couple acted somewhat like his parents
even though they give orders to him, but this ended abruptly
when they found out he secretly kept touch with his awful girlfriend.
At the discovery, they scolded him severely and were getting oppressive to him,
having a kind of relationship between rulers (the couple) and their subject.
From that moment, things became out of their hands: they were getting mean,
cruel and obsessed with him, trying to control him absolutely,
while he didn’t wholeheartedly give in.

 

그러다가, 어느 날 친구는 갑자기 자신의 아파트로 돌아갔고, 커플의 전화와 문자에 응답하지 않는데,
그 커플은, 조금은 친구에 대한 자신들의 행동에 대한 부끄러움과 당혹감에서,
대부분은 친구의 반항에 분노해서, 제정신이 아닌 상태가 된다.
결국, 그들은 친구가 그의 아파트에서 끔찍한 여자친구와 같이 있는 것을 발견하고,
자신들의 명령에 따를 것을 요구한다.  친구는.....

Yet, suddenly the friend went back to his apartment one day,
and did not return the couple’s calls and texts, which drove the couple insane,
being partly shameful and embarrassed by their actions to him and mainly furious by his defiance.
Finally, they found him with the awful girl friend at his apartment, and they asked him to obey their order.
Then, he.....

 

결말을 알면 이 이야기를 읽는 기쁨을 망치게 될 것이라서, 결말은 말하지 않겠지만,
“나쁜 아이”를 읽은 후 나는, 어안이 벙벙하고, 심한 공포에 빠지기까지 했다.
멋진 이야기를 만들고, 등장 인물 세 명간의 관계의 변질을 세밀하게 묘사하고,
커플이 친구를 지배하고 싶어하는 심정을 이해하게 설득하고, 일상적인 상황을 공포로 만드는 저자의 능력에
정말 깊은 인상을 받았다는 것 역시, 강조하고 싶다.
그녀의 잔잔하고 간결한 문체는 이야기를 더욱 자연스럽고 등골이 오싹하게 만든다.

I am not gonna tell you how the story ends since doing it only spoils your pleasure of reading.
One thing to point out is, after finishing reading “Bad Boy,”
I was dumfounded and even fell into a deadly fear.
Also, I want to emphasize that I was really impressed by the author’s ability to make a brilliant story,
to describe the distortion of relationships among the three characters in detail,
to persuade me into following psyche of the couple developing obsession to rule their friend,
and to turn a probable everyday situation into a horror.
Her style of writing is very calm and concise, which makes her story more realistic and spine-chilling.

 

이 책의 단편소설들 전부의 제목, 그리고 이 책 자체의 제목도 한글로 출판될 때는 의역될 것이라고 생각합니다.
저는 그냥 직역했습니다.
