(First Short Novel of Ted Chiang’s Stories of Your Life, A Collection of His Short Stories)

 

“당신 인생의 이야기”를 구입한 이유는 내가 알 수 없는 이유로 한국에서는 “Contact”라는 제목으로 개봉된

영화 “Arrival”  때문이었다. 소설을 기반으로 영화가 개봉될 때 마다, 원작 소설 자체도 맹렬히 홍보가 된다.

그런 홍보 덕분에,  신문 서평에서 “당신 인생의 이야기” 라는 책의 존재를 알게 되었다.

공상과학 소설을 그다지 좋아하지는 않지만, 호의적인 신문 서평과 아마존에서의 열광적인 서평들 때문에

결국 책을 사게 되었다. 

I purchased “Stories of Your Life” because of the movie, “Arrival,” released in Korea

with the title of “Contact” for some reason I still don’t know.

When every movie based on a novel is released, the novel itself is also fiercely promoted.

Thanks to such promotion, I acknowledged the presence of this book, “Stories of Your Life,”

in the book section of a newspaper. I wasn’t particularly a great fan of science fictions,

but I was persuaded to buy this book by a really favorable review in the newspaper

along with rave Amazon reviews on the book.

 

책을 처음 펼쳐서 첫 번째 소설의 제목을 읽었을 때, “뭐? 바빌론의 탑? 성경에 나오는 그 바빌론?” 이라며 의아해했다.

그 바빌론이 맞았다.  주인공은 Elam땅에서 온 광부인데, 바빌론의 탑 정상에서 창공(蒼空)을 깨고
그 안으로 들어가는 일을 하기 위해 바빌론으로 불려 왔다.

When I opened the book and read the title of the first novel, I wondered, “What? Tower of Babylon?
Is it the Babylon in the Bible?” Yes, indeed it was.
The main character was a miner from the land of Elam, brought to Babylon to break
and dig through the vault of heaven on the top of the tower.

 

초반 몇 페이지를 읽으며, 나는, “뭐야? 공상과학소설은 주로 진보된 사회나 미래사회 및
그런 기술들을 기반으로 하는 거 아니었어?” 라며 놀라고 말았다.
그렇기는커녕, 이 소설은 그 당시의 기술만을 보여주고 있다. 등장인물들은 지구가 평평하다고 믿고 있고,
탑을 오르면서도 그런 믿음에 기초하여 지구와 천체를 관찰한다. 
지금에서야 내가 얼마나 공상과학소설 장르에 무지했는지를 깨달았지만, 그 당시엔 몰랐었다.
다행스럽게도 이 소설을 계속 읽을 수 있었던 건, 아름다운 문장을 쓰는 작가의 탁월한 능력 때문이었다.
소설 바로 첫 문장이 내 눈과 마음을 사로잡아 버렸다.

While reading very first few pages, I was also surprised.
“What is it? Isn’t science fiction usually based on advanced or futuristic societies and such technologies?”
Rather, the story only presents technologies in that time—its characters believed
the earth was flat and their observation on the earth and a celestial body
while climbing up the tower also reflected such beliefs.
Now I realize how ignorant I was about the science fiction genre! But at that time, I didn’t know it.
Yet, fortunately I kept reading it because I was deeply impressed by the author’s excellent ability
to create beautiful sentences. The very first sentence of the story literally caught my eyes and mind.

 

주인공과 동료광부들은 수개월 걸려 바빌론 탑의 정상에 오르게 된다.
작가는 정상까지 이르는 그들의 여행을, 탑의 거주자들이나 광부들이 탑의 높이에 적응하는 모습
그리고 정상까지 이를 동안 풍경의 변화들로, 손쉽게 시각화 할 수 있게 만든다.   

The main character and his co-miners climbed the tower for several months to reach its top.
The author describes their journey to the top with descriptions on the tower-dwellers,
miners’ adaptation to the tower’s altitude, and changes in sceneries as they made their way to the top,
all of which can easily be visualized with ease.        

 

야훼에게 다가가기 위해 창공을 부숴야 하는 주어진 임무에 대한 주인공의 생각 역시 탑을 오르며 변화를 겪게 된다.
처음엔, 탑을 세운 인간의 업적에 대한 감동만을 느꼈지만, 탑의 정상에 다가감에 따라 그는, 야훼에 대한 경의를 느끼고
야훼에게 감히 닿고자 하며, 창공을 부수려는 사람들을 야훼가 처벌하지 않을까 라는 하는 두려움을 느끼게 된다. 

Also, the main character’s mind toward his assigned task, to break the vault of heaven to reach Yahweh,
went through some changes as he climbed to the top of the tower.
At first, he was only moved by humans’ achievement, building the tower,
but as he became closer to the top, he was in awe of Yahweh
and started fearing that he would punish humans for daringly trying to reach him,
even breaking the vault of heaven.

 

결국, 그는 탑의 정상에 다다르고 창공을 부수기 시작했고, 그 이후 광부들이 뚫고 들어간
창공 안 터널에 저수지들—과거 지구를 물에 잠기게 했던 바로 그 저수지들—의 물이 터널에 범람하지 않도록
막아주는 화강암 미닫이 문을 만드는 이집트인들과 같이 일하게 되지만,
어느 날,  광부들은 창공 안의 저수지를 터뜨리게 되고 터널들은 물에 잠기게 된다.
주인공은 닫혀버린 미닫이 문과 쏟아지는 물 사이에 두 명의 동료들과 같이 갇히게 되고,
그들은 물에 빠지게 된다. 주인공은 점점 숨이 가빠지는 것을 느끼면서.....

Finally, he reached the top and started breaking the vault of heaven, later working along with
the Egyptians designated to build granite sliding doors to prevent water of the reservoirs in heaven
—yes, the ones that had flooded the earth—in tunnels the miners dug into the vault.
The work proceeded for some time, but one day they hit the reservoir
and the tunnel inside the vault of heaven became flooded.
The main character was stuck between closed sliding doors and flooding water
with his two coworkers and they became drowned in the water.
Then he felt he became out of breath and...

 

이 단편은 너무나 훌륭했고, 모든 공상과학소설이 진보된 기술이나 미래기술을 다룰 필요는 없다라는 것,

그리고 고대(古代)와 그 당시의 기술 역시 공상과학소설의 좋은 배경이 된다는 것을 내게 가르쳐 주었다.
게다가, 이 글에서 내가 가장 좋아하는 끝부분 몇 페이지들은, 영감을 주며, 철학적이고, 심지어는 종교적이기도 한다.
그 부분은 주인공이 야훼가 하늘에 닿으려는 인간들을 그냥 내버려 둔 이유를 깨닫게 되고,
또 두 세계, 야훼의 세계와 인간의 세계, 간의 관계를 주인공이 이해하게 되는 것을 서술하고 있다.
단지, 첫 번째 단편소설을 읽는 것만으로도 나는 Ted Chiang의 팬이 되어버렸다.    

This short story was really brilliant, making me realize that all science fictions
don’t always need to deal with advanced or future technology and that the ancient time
can be a good setting for the kind of fiction with its own technology.
Moreover, it is really insightful, philosophical and even religious
because of its last few pages, also my best part. It was the main character’s realization on the reason
why Yahweh did leave people trying to reach heaven, and his comprehension of the relationship 

between the two worlds: Yahweh’s and humans’. Reading just the first short story is more than enough
for me to become a fan of this writer, Ted Chiang.
