A White Crime Writer’s Thoughts on Police Brutality

경찰가혹행위에 대한 백인 범죄소설 작가의 생각.

The author of this article, he himself as a crime fiction writer, claims that

white crime writers somewhat have responsibility on the murder of black citizens.

범죄소설 작가인 이 기사의 저자는 백인 범죄소설 작가들이

살해된 흑인시민들에 대해 다소간의 책임이 있다고 주장한다.

 

He explained most Americans’ image of the police mainly stems from books and TV shows,

depicting them using force to extract information from suspects.

부분의 미국인들이 경찰에 대해 갖고 있는 이미지는 책이나 TV 프로그램에서 기인하는 데,

그런 책이나 TV 프로그램은 경찰이 용의자에게서 정보를 얻어내기 위해 폭력을 사용하는 것을 묘사한다.

Such illustration somehow implicitly makes people think the use of force by the police might be justified.

그런 묘사는 어떻게든 암묵적으로 사람들에게 경찰이 폭력을 사용하는 것은 정당하다고 생각하게 만들다.

 

Ironically, early crime fictions were skeptical about the law enforcement,

mainly writing the stories of letting private investigators upheld justice.

아이러니 하게도, 초기의 범죄소설들은 법의 집행에 대해 회의적이어서,

주로 사립탐정들이 정의를 지탱해나가는 이야기들을 썼다.

However, this tendency changed in the 1950s

when crime novels featuring the police became popular.

With that newly gained popularity, crime fictions had new platforms such as TV and radio.

새로 얻은 인기와 함께, 범죄 소설들은 TV나 라디오 같은 새로운 플랫폼을 얻게 된다.

Yet, these new media came at a cost, especially on TV shows,

which needed the police’s cooperation for production.  

그러나 이런 새로운 미디어는 대가를 치르게 되는데,

특히 제작을 위해 경찰의 도움이 필요했던 TV쇼의 경우 더 그랬다.

Such as a need somewhat pressured the TV shows to be in favor of overall police activities,

even leading the TV shows to a sort of “police propaganda.”

그런 필요성은 다소 TV쇼가 경찰의 활동을 호의적으로 대하게끔 압력을 넣었고,

심지어는 TV쇼가 일종의 “경찰 과대선전”이 되었다. 

In addition, the TV shows and the police developed mutual interest.

거기에 더해, TV쇼와 경찰은 상호이익을 증진시켜 나갔다.

 

Considering that, it is no wonder that books and TV shows illustrate the police

with a favorable eye, and even turn a blind eye to officers’ excessive use of force.

이런 점을 고려할 때 책이나 TV show가 경찰을 호의적으로 묘사하고,

심지어는 경찰들의 과다한 폭력 사건들을 눈감아주는 것은 놀랄만한 일이 아니다.

And, obviously, most of those products are created

by white males who’ve rarely experienced police brutality.

그리고, 분명히, 그런 창작물들은 경찰 가혹행위를 경험해 본적 없는

백인 남성들에 의해 만들어졌다.

Moreover, even those white male writers can risk their careers if they defy this trend.

게다가, 그런 백인 남성 범죄소설가들 조차도, 그런 흐름을 거부하면, 경력이 위태롭게 된다.

 

Although there are people who express their concerns on lionizing the police

(even with a not much strong voice), the author points out that

they miss an important point: people “write what sells.”

비록 경찰을 치켜 올리는데 대해 우려를 표명한 사람들 (비록 생각보다 목소리는 작았지만)이 있지만,

저자는 그들이 중요한 요점, “팔리는 것을 쓴다” 라는 것을 놓치고 있다고 주장한다.  

The author asserts that the market’s taste can be altered and the success of some stories,

quite deviant from the trend, shows the possibility of change,

which lets writers write even dangerous cops.

저자는 시장의 취향이라는 것이 바뀔 수 있다고 주장하고,

트렌드와는 상당히 동떨어진 이야기들의 성공이 변화의 가능성을 이끌어 내어 작가들이

위험한 경찰에 관해서도 쓸 수 있게 할 것이라고 단언했다.

This would be plausible with more diverse writers such as writers

with diverse color, or L.G.T.B.Q. orientation; or authors featuring female protagonists

who passionately break taboos on typical crime fictions and help the oppressed find their voices.  

이것은 다양한 피부색을 가졌거나, 성적 소수자인 작가들,

또는 열정적으로 일반적인 범죄소설의 터부를 깨고 억압당한 사람들에게 자신의 목소리를 찾도록

도와주는 여성주인공을 등장시키는 작가들에 의해 가능하게 될 것이다.

 

Adding to that, the author maintains that crime writers in general

should acknowledge those victimized by the police

and they can use their works as a means to fight the racism in police

with the power of crime novels’ huge popularity and influence on people.

거기에 더해, 저자는 대체로 범죄소설가들이 경찰에게 괴롭힘을 당한 사람들을 인지해야 하고,

자신들의 작품들이 갖고 있는 엄청난 인기와 사람들에 대한 영향력을

경찰 내의 인종차별에 맞서기 위한 수단으로써 작품을 사용해야 한다고 주장한다.

 

One thing that really bothers me while reading this article is I have to be really attentive to what I look and read.

이 기사를 읽으면서 정말 신경 쓰인 것은 내가 읽고 보는 것에 대해 주의를 기울어야 한다는 것이다.
