이 포스팅은 2019년 1월 29일자 뉴욕 타임즈의 사설, “과학자들이 생명의 비밀을 무심히 다루어도 될 것인가?”를
읽고 요약한 것입니다.

This posting is my summary after reading a New York Time’s editorial titled, “Should Scientists Toy
with The Secret to Life?” published on Jan. 28, 2019.

 

이 사설은 최근 두 개의 배아에서 DNA를 크리스퍼(Crispr)라는 유전자 편집 기술을 사용해서,  세계 최초로
유전적으로 강화된 디자이너 베이비들을 만들려고 했던 중국인 과학자의 사례로 시작한다. 크리스퍼(Crispr)는
인간 유전자를 조작하는데 있어서 과학자들에게 전례가 없을 만큼의 편리함을 제공함은 물론이고
인간의 생명을 개조할 수 있는 능력을 갖춘 기술이라고 소개 되고 있다.

The editorial starts with a recent case of a Chinese scientist who tried to create the first genetically
enhanced “designer babies”in the world by altering DNA of two embryos with his use of Crispr,
a gene editing technique. Crispr is described as a technique that provides scientists with unprecedented
ease in changing human DNA and that even has the capability of remaking human life.

 

비록 과학계 전체가 만장일치로 그 중국인 과학자를 비난하고 있지만, 유전자 편집에 관해서는 통합된 의견을
도출하지 못해서, 그 문제에 관한 포괄적이고, 전 세계적인 대화가 필요하다.

Even though the entire scientific community unanimously criticized the Chinese researcher, it does
not have a unified voice on the issue of gene editing so there is a need for a comprehensive and global
dialogue over the problem.

 

그런 요구에 부응하여, 이 사설은 유전자 편집에 대한 효과적인 논의를 위한 3가지 방법을 제시하고 있다.

1. 다양한 국적 및 다양한 분야의 전문가들의 의견을 들어라.

2. 대중을 의사결정 과정에 참여시켜라.

3. 이미 존재하고 있는 조치를 활용해서 금지된 유전자 편집을 막고, 적절한 유전자 편집을 장려하라.   

Facing such a demand, the editorial suggests three ways for the effective discussion of gene editing:

1. Let many experts in various fields from many countries voice their opinions.

2. Include the public in the decision making process.

3. Use already existing measures to prevent prohibited gene editing processes and promote appropriate ones.
