The adjective “distant” means “far away or apart in space or time.”

Most English learners are familiar with this adjective since it is considered one of basic vocabularies.

Thus, we use “distant” to describe something “far away or apart in space”

for all four areas—reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

“distant”는 “공간이나 시간이 떨어진/머나먼” 이라는 의미의 형용사입니다.

distant는 기본 단어로 여겨지고 있기 때문에, 영어를 배우는 사람들 대부분은 distant를 잘 알고 있습니다.

그래서 우리는 “공간적으로 거리가 떨어진/머나먼”이라는 의미의 distant는

읽기, 듣기, 말하기, 쓰기 4가지 영역 전부에서 잘 사용하고 있습니다.

Yet, the strange thing is, we are less familiar with the use of “distant”

that means “far away or apart in time.”

Thus, we tend not to use the word with this meaning in our speaking or writing

although we understand what “a distant goal” means while we read or hear it.

Honestly, I am not much an exception, so I would like to introduce some examples.

그런데, 이상한 것은 “시간적으로 떨어진/머나먼”이라는 의미의 distant가

우리에게는 그다지 친숙하지 않다는 것입니다.

그러다 보니, 비록 우리가 읽거나 들을 때 “a distant goal”의 의미(“머나먼 목표/요원한 목표”)를

이해하긴 해도, 우리는 “시간적으로 떨어진/머나먼”이라는 의미를 가진

“distant”를 말하기와 쓰기에서 잘 쓰지 않습니다.

솔직히 저도 그래요, 그래서 몇 가지 예시들을 소개해드리려고 합니다.

China ends Wuhan lockdown, but normal life is a distant dream.

중국은 우한 봉쇄를 끝냈지만, 일상적인 삶은 요원한 꿈이다.
