cul-de-sac?

 

“Caught in history’s cul-de-sac,” was the title of an article 

on the front page of the New York Times (Asia Pacific Edition) today. 

I picked up the paper this morning (along with Korea Joongang Daily) and saw that title.  

“역사의 교착상태에 갇힌”은 오늘 자 뉴욕 타임즈 아시아 태평양판 제 1면에 나온 기사의 제목이다. 

아침에 신문을 집다가 (같이 온 코리아 중앙 데일리와 함께) 이 제목을 봤다

 

Well, the first impression of reading the title was... 

“What is cul-de-sac? This might be a word with French origin. 

Um... I have no idea.” Thus, I looked for it in a dictionary.  

Cul-de-sac has two meanings: 1. a dead-end street and 2. an impasse.

그 제목을 처음 봤을 때의 인상은.. “cul-de-sac이 뭐지? 불어를 기원으로 한 것 같은데. 

음...전혀 모르겠어”였었다. 그래서, 사전으로 찾아봤다. 

“cul-de-sac”은 두 가지의 의미가 있습니다. 1. 막다른 골목, 그리고 2. (이도저도 할 수 없는) 막다른 지경, 교착상태

Well, it is clear that the “cul-de-sac” that I saw in the newspaper is the second meaning, an “impasse.” 

Before we discuss the cul-de-sac as an impasse, let’s start with it as “a dead-end street,” the first meaning.

음..내가 신문에서 본 “cul-de-sac”은 명확하게 “막다른 지경, 교착상태”라는 두 번째 의미였다. 

그러나 두 번째 의미의 “cul-de-sac”을 논하기 전에, 

첫 번째 의미인 “막다른 골목”을 나타내는 cul-de-sac을 먼저 알아보도록 하겠다.    

 

1. cul-de-sac: a dead-end street: 막다른 골목

We live in a quiet cul-de-sac.

우리는 조용한 막다른 골목에 살고 있다.

2. cul-de-sac: an impasse “(이도저도 할 수 없는) 막다른 지경, 교착상태”

 

Now, we’re going to deal with the “cul-de-sac” as an impasse. 

I think the article I mentioned above certainly helps you understand the word.

이제 “막다른 지경, 교착상태”라는 두 번째 의미의 “cul-de-sac”을 다루려 한다. 

내가 위에서 언급한 기사는 그 단어의 의미를 이해하는 데 분명히 도움이 될 거라고 생각한다.

 

Once again let me emphasize that only knowing the meaning of a word is not enough. 

Knowing in what context the word is used is the very basic to store it in your long-term memory. 

In this respect, let me explain what the article with the word “cul-de-sac” was about. 

It deals with Koreans in Japan whose family members moved to North Korea in the 1960s. 

Thus, many of them visited North Korea several times since then.

다시 한 번, 단어 뜻만 아는 것만으로는 부족하다는 점을 강조한다.

Setting aside all the background knowledge we have regarding this sentence, 

I believe most of you will not forget the word ‘cul-de-sac’ easily after reading it.

이 문장과 관련된 우리의 배경지식은 제쳐두고, 

이 문장을 읽은 대부분이 “cul-de-sac”이라는 단어를 잊지 않으리라 생각한다.

 

Since I believe the best way to acquire a new word is to repeat it in various sentences, 

I do think offering one example sentence –however relevant it is to us—for a new word is never enough. 

Therefore, I’d like to present more sentences with the word, “cul-de-sac.”
