Backbone

Posts belonging to this category, “Vocabularies,” are two types of vocabularies. 
First, vocabularies, which I believe I know, with surprisingly unknown or unfamiliar meanings,
and second, vocabularies I do not know.
Thus, some vocabularies can be the ones you really know well,
but even in those cases I hope example sentences, which I will also present, might be helpful.

이 게시물은 “backbone”이라는 단어에 관한 것입니다.

 

The word “backbone” has three main meanings:
1. spine, 2. the most significant part of something, and 3.strength and courage.
One thing to note is that the former two meanings are countable nouns--
though the second one is usually used as a singular noun—but the third meaning is uncountable.

backbone이라는 단어는 3개의 주된 의미가 있습니다:
1. 척추, 2. 근간, 중추, 3. 기개, 근성.
한 가지 주의하셔야 할 건, 첫 번째, 두 번째 의미로 쓰일 때는 셀 수 있는 명사—
두 번째 의미일 때는 보통 단수입니다만—세 번째 의미일 때는 셀 수 없는 명사라는 점입니다.

Let’s discuss all of them one by one.

하나씩 살펴보죠.

 

1. backbone: spine: 척추

There are many nerves in the backbone (= spine).

척추에는 많은 신경이 있다.

2. backbone:  the most significant part of something: 근간, 중추.  

She is the backbone of the family.

그녀는 가족의 중추이다.

Agriculture forms the backbone of the rural economy.

농업은 지방 경제의 근간을 형성한다. (= 농업은 지방경제의 근간이다.)

3. backbone: strength and courage: 기개, 근성 (uncountable noun: 셀 수 없는 명사)

He doesn’t have the backbone to face the truth.

그에겐 사실을 직면할만한 기개가 없다.

Furthermore, this third meaning of backbone is commonly used with the verb, show or display. 

Actually, you can see “show backbone” a lot more frequently than “display backbone.” 

Both “show backbone” and “display backbone” mean demonstrating a person’s bravery and vigor. 

You can just apply the third meaning of “backbone” and the fundamental meaning of “show” or “display.”

거기에 대해, 기개, 용기라는 의미의 “backbone”은 흔히 동사인 “show” 또는 “display”와 함께 쓰입니다. 

사실 “show backbone”을 “display backbone”보다는 훨씬 많이 보시게 될 겁니다. 

“show backbone”과 “display backbone” 둘 다  “한 사람의 용기와 정신력을 보여주다”를 의미합니다. 

단지 backbone의 세 번째 의미와 “show”나 “display”의 근본적인 의미를 적용해주시면 됩니다. 

즉 “~의 기개/용기를 보여주다”라는 의미가 됩니다.

 

Let’s read examples of “show/display backbone.”

He showed some backbone by refusing to compromise his values.

그는 가치관을 절충하는 것을 거부함으로써 어느 정도의 기개를 보여주었다.

Jill은 역경에 직면해서 끈기와 기개를 보여주었다.

The new CEO fiercely resisted the board of directors’ pressure to lay off more than 

30 percent of workers in his company by threatening to quit his position immediately 

if the board would indeed carry out the layoff. 

His firm opposition puzzled the entire board 

since none of his predecessors had shown the sort of backbone he did.

전 직원의 30%를 정리해고 하라는 이사회의 압력에 대해 

신임 최고경영자는 만약 이사회가 정리해고를 실행하면, 

자신은 즉각적으로 사임하겠다고 위협하면서 격렬하게 반대했다.  

이사회는 신임 최고경영자의 단호한 반대에 당황했는데, 

전임최고경영자들 중 어느 누구도 그런 종류의 기개를 보여주지 않았었기 때문이다.

Well, it’s not bad, but it will be a lot better to show you the exact sentence on the article.

이것도 나쁘진 않지만, 기사에 나온 정확한 문장을 보여드리는 것이 더 나을 것 같네요.

 

 “While Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and John Bolton, the national security adviser, 

are viewed as NATO supporters, neither has shown the sort of backbone Mr. Mattis did.”

국무총리인 마이크 폼페이오와 안보 보좌관인 존 볼턴도 NATO지지자로 여겨지긴 하지만, 

그들 중 어느 누구도 매티스(전 국방부 장관이죠) 같은 기개는 보여주지 않았다.

Let’s make another example

자 예시를 하나 만들어 봅시다.

 

Jerry showed backbone by not yielding to bullies at his school.

Jerry는 학교에 불량배들에게 굴복하지 않음으로써, 그의 기개를 보여주었다.

 

You surely think that I almost referred the first example sentence, 

“He showed some backbone by refusing to compromise his values,” to make the above example.

“Yes, I did, but in different context. 

What I am trying to say here is that you can make various sentences 

with the phrase “show backbone” by understanding the phrase’s meaning

분명히 제가 이 예시를 만드는데, 첫 번째 예시였던 

“He showed some backbone by refusing to compromise his values”를 거의  참조했다고 생각하실텐데요. 

네, 그랬죠, 하지만 다른 맥락에서 사용했습니다. 

제가 말하고자 하는 건, “show backbone”이라는 구절의 뜻 (기개를 보이다)을 아신다면, 

그걸 이용해서 다양한 문장들을 만드실 수 있다..라는 점입니다.
