Sterling (adjective)

 

sterling (adjective): of the highest quality; 매우 뛰어난, 훌륭한

 

I believe most of you are familiar with the word “sterling” as a noun.

명사로 쓰이는 sterling 에 대해서는 대부분 익숙하실 겁니다.

 

When sterling is used as a noun it means British money, the pound.

명사로 쓰일 경우 sterling은 영국 화폐, 파운드를 의미하죠.

 

It also means British coinage with a basic fineness 0.5000 for silver

and 0.91 for gold

또한 표준순도 0.5000의 영국 은화와 0.91의 영국 금화를 만드는

영국 화폐주조를 말하기도 하죠.

 

Adding to that it refers sterling silver and articles made of that silver.

거기에 더해 순은 (순도92,5)과 순은으로 만든 물건을 말하죠.

 

Used as an adjective, it has three meanings,

two of them are closely related to its usage as a noun:

one is “composed of or relevant to sterling or British money”,

and the other is “made up of sterling silver.”

형용사로 쓰이는 sterling은 세 가지 뜻이 있는데,

그 중 두 개는 명사로써의 sterling 과 밀접한 관계기 있습니다.

하나는 “파운드나 영국 화폐로 구성된, 또는 관련된,”

다른 하나는 “순은으로 만들어진” 입니다.

 

Well, what we have to pay attention to is its third meaning of sterling as an adjective,

which refers “of the highest quality.”

우리가 주의를 기울여야 할 것은 형용사로 쓰인 sterling의 3번’째 의미

“매우 뛰어난, 훌륭한” 입니다.

Keeping pound after independence may well be a sterling idea.

Can a country be politically independent yet still use the currency of another nation?

And, if so, what limitation does this place on the economic policy of the new state?
