This idiom, “when it comes to~,” is quite frequently used.

I believe all of you would be quite familiar with it…

“when it comes to~”라는 숙어는 상당히 많이 쓰이죠.

여러분 모두 이 숙어에 상당히 익숙하실 거라고 생각합니다.

 

Yet, I decided to discuss “when it comes to~” in this post

because I’d like to introduce you a rather less frequent—but also important—usage of this idiom,

along with the usual familiar one.  

그러나, 저는 이 게시물에서 “when it comes to~”를 다루기로 했는데요.

그런 결심을 한 이유는 제가 여러분들께 상당히 익숙한 when it comes to~의 용례와 함께

그보다는 좀 덜 쓰이는—하지만 중요한—용례를 하나 더 알려 드리기 위해서입니다. 

 

Anyway, before introducing any of them, we need to find out the meaning of “when it comes to~.”

어쨌든, 그 둘 중 어느 하나라도 소개하기 전에, “when it comes to~”의 의미를 알아야 하죠.

 

when it comes to~: used to identify the specific topic that is being talked about

“when it comes to~”는 직역하면 “이야기 하고자 하는 특정한 주제를 밝힐 때 사용되는 표현입니다.

영한사전으로 보자면, “~에 관하여, ~라면”이런 표현입니다.

Still, although the meaning of “when it comes to~” is universal regardless of the forms of words

ensuing it, we need to differentiate “when it comes to sb/sth” from “when it comes to V-ing + object.”

그렇지만, 비록 “when it comes to~”의 의미는 뒤에 나오는 단어가 무엇이건 간에 공통적이긴 합니다만,

“when it comes to 사람/사물”과 “when it comes to V-ing(동명사) + 목적어”가 나오는 두 가지 형태는

구분해줄 필요가 있습니다.

Let’s start with “when it comes to sb/sth.”

그럼 “when it comes to 사람/사물”부터 시작해 봅시다.

 

when it comes to sb/sth: as for somebody or something; speaking about somebody or something

“when it comes to 사람/사물”은 직역하면 “어떤 사람/사물에 관해서라면;

“어떤 사람/사물에 대해 말하자면” 입니다. 영한 사전에서 제시하는 기본 뜻을 참고하시면서

“어떤 사람/사물에 관하여, 어떤 사람/사물이라면” 정도로 해석해주시면 됩니다.

when it comes to V-ing + object: as for doing something; speaking about doing something

“when it comes to V-ing + 목적어”는 직역하면 “~을 ~하는 것에 관해서는;

~을 ~하는 것에 관해서 말하는”입니다. 영한사전에서 보여주는 의미를 참고하시면

“~을 ~하는 것에 관해서, ~을 ~하는 것이라면” 정도로 해석하시면 됩니다.

please note that it can be translated as “when it comes to sb/sth.”
