at the expense of 

 

This idiom, “at the expense of,” has two meanings as follows:

“at the expense”라는 숙어는 다음과 같은 두 가지 의미를 갖고 있습니다:

1. Paid for by somebody or something: ~의 비용으로

2. To the detriment or disadvantage of (somebody or something):

~을 잃어가며, ~을 훼손시키면서, ~의 희생으로

Between the two meanings, the second one is used far more frequently.

그런 두 가지 의미들 중에, 두 번째 의미가 훨씬 더 많이 사용됩니다.

 

Yet, let’s start with the first one anyway.

그렇지만, 어쨌듯 첫 번째 의미부터 시작해보겠습니다.

 

1. at the expense of: Paid for by somebody or something ~의 비용으로

Once I learned that the trip was at the expense of my department, I decided to go.
