영어 (혹은 다른 외국어)를 잘하기 위해, 뭘 읽어야 하지?

What to Read For your better Fluency in English (or other foreign languages)?

In my previous blog post, “Why Reading Matters in Learning English!”(or Any Foreign Language),
in the same category, I have emphasized the importance of reading in acquiring better fluency
in English (or any foreign language).

 

 

그 게시물을 읽고 나면, 자연스럽게 “뭘 읽어야 하지?”라는 질문이 생길 겁니다.  

After reading the post, one question might naturally emerge: “What do I have to read?”

 

하지만, 그 질문에 대한 답 이전에, 질보다 양을 우선시하시면 안 된다! 라는 걸 꼭 기억해주셔요.  

Still, before answering the question, there’s one thing you have to keep in mind: DO NOT
PRIORITIZE QUANTITY OVER QUALITY!

 

물론, 많이 읽는 건 안 읽는 것보다야 훨씬 좋죠. 하지만, 이해하지 못하거나,
그 책이 대체 무엇에 관한 것인지도 모르고 있는 다면, 소중한 시간을 낭비하시는 거죠.  
그렇지만, 모든 걸 다 이해해야만 한다..라는 건 아닙니다.
그냥, 한 번 읽으셨을 때, 읽으시는 것의 전체적 줄거리나 메시지를 이해하시는 걸로 충분합니다.

Of course, reading many books or materials is a lot better than reading nothing.
Yet, only focusing on reading many books without understanding them or even having no idea
what they are talking about only wastes your precious time.
Oh, do not worry, I am not asking you to understand everything about that you read.
Just understanding the main plot, or message of what you read is enough when you first finish reading it.  

 

이제 뭘 읽어야 하냐?라는 근본적인 문제로 돌아가봅시다.
실상, 대답은 간단해요: 재미있는 걸 고르셔요.
달리 말하자면, 읽고 싶어지는 거면 오케이 입니다.

Now, let’s go back to the fundamental question of choosing what to read.
Actually, the answer is so simple: pick up something interesting.
In other words, whatever makes you want to read it is OK.

그렇지만, 여기엔 함정이 하나 있어요!
읽으려고 고르신 것이 본인에게 너무 쉬우면 안됩니다.
마찬가지로, 읽으시려는 게 책이건, 다른 것이건, 너무 어려운 것을 선택하셔도 안됩니다.
왜냐고요? 읽으려 결심하신 게 너무 쉬운 거면, 아무 것도 배우지 못해요.
비슷하게, 고르신 게 너무 어려우면, 읽는 행위 자체가 지나친 고통이 되어버리니까요.

Yet, there’s a catch!
The thing you choose to read shouldn’t be too easy for you.
Likewise, never pick a book, or whatever you want to read, which is difficult for you.
Why? If anything you decide to read is too easy to read, then you end up getting nothing from it.
Similarly, if the material of your choice is too difficult, the act of reading becomes
extremely painful to you.

 

그렇다면, 대체 어떤 기준으로 읽을거리를 골라야 할까요?
이것 역시 아주 쉬워요. 고른 책을 훑어보셔요,
만약 한 페이지 (또는 어떤 걸 고르셨냐에 따라 기사 하나) 당 모르는 단어가 30%를 넘는다면, 그건 읽지 마셔요.
즉, 이해할 수 없는 단어의 양이 어떤 걸 읽어야 하는 가를 고르는 기준이라는 거죠.

Then, what would be your standard to selecting what to read?
It is also really simple. Just scan the book of your choice and if you don’t understand
more than 30% of vocabularies per page (or per article, depending on what sort of material you choose),
then it is not for you. That is, the best criterion for selecting something to read is
the amount of vocabularies you don’t understand.

 

읽을거리를 고르시는데 있어 또 하나 기억하셔야 하는 것이 있습니다.
가능하다면, 여러 번 되풀이해서 읽으실 수 있는 걸로 고르셔요.
필수요건은 아닙니다만, 제가 읽기엔 양도 중요하지만 질도 중요하다고 이전에 말씀 드렸듯이
한 번 읽으신 걸 다시 읽는 건 정말 엄청난 도움이 됩니다.
그러니, 적어도 두 번은 읽을 만한 가치가 있는 걸 고르셔요.
이미 읽은 걸 다시 읽으시면, 다양한 문장들과 더 많은 세부사항 같은,
처음 읽었을 때 미처 주의를 기울이지 못했던 것들을 발견하게 되실 거여요.

There’s one more point you have to bear in mind before start choosing what you are going to read.
If possible, please pick up something to read over and over.
Yet, this is not a must, but, as I emphasized previously,
we also have to focus not only on the quantity of our reading but also its quality
since re-reading the thing you finished reading is really greatly helpful.
Thus, please select something worth reading at least twice.
By re-reading what you have read, you can discover new things,
such as sentence varieties or more details, which you did put much attention in your fist reading.  

 

만약에, 처음엔 재미있었지만, 다시 읽을만한 가치가 없는 것을 읽게 되셨다면,
다시 읽느라 시간을 낭비하지 마셔요.
그냥 버려버리거나, (책이라면) 중고서점에 팔아버리시고, 다른 걸 읽으셔요.
세상에는 당신이 읽어주길 기다리는 많은 좋은 책들과 읽을거리들이 있으니까요.

If you happen to read something that really interests you at first and yet it turns out
unworthy of re-reading, then don’t waste your time reading it again.
Just throw it away or sell it to a used book store (if it is a book), and find other things to read.
There are many books and reading materials out there waiting for you to read them.
