영어 (또는 외국어)를 배우는데 왜 읽기가 중요한가!
Why Reading Matters in Learning English (or Any Foreign Language)!

읽기의 엄청난 중요성에도 불구하고, 영어를 공부하는 데 있어서, 읽기는 약간, 솔직히 절대적으로, 과소평가 되어 있다.

사람들은 보통 읽는 것은 상대적으로 쉽다고 생각하고, 비교적 잘 하고 있다고 믿는 다.

일반적으로 독해 점수가 가장 좋게 나오는 시험 성적 역시 그런 사람들의 믿음을 증명해주는 것 같다.   

Despite its huge importance, reading is somewhat, frankly definitely, underrated in studying English.

 Usually, people think it relatively easy and believe they can do it well.

Test scores also seem to prove such belief since people typically score best on their reading comprehension.

 

그렇다면, 영어를 잘 하기 위해서 읽기에 할애하는 시간은 좀 줄이고 다른 영역들을 더 잘하려고 노력하는 것이 합리적일까?

Then, is it reasonable that people should spend less time reading and focus on improving other areas to speak English Better?

 

불행하게도, 대부분의 경우, 대답은 “아니오” 이다.
비록 영어의 주요 4영역 중에 읽기가 아마 도 가장 쉬운 영역일수도 있지만,

읽기를 계속적으로 하지 않는다면, 다른 세 영역 (청취, 말하기, 쓰기)에서 능숙해질 수 없다.

읽기는 영어를 배우는데 필요한 모든 정보를  모으는데 가장 기본적이고 효과적인 방법이라서,  
읽기 없이는 세 가지 영역도 포함해서, 영어 실력을 늘릴 수 없다.

Unfortunately, in most cases, the answer is “NO.”

Even though reading might be the easiest among the four main areas of English,
fluency in those three (listening, speaking, and writing) cannot be attained
unless one is a good and persistent reader in English.
Since reading is the most fundamental way to collect all the information necessary to learn English,
we cannot improve our fluency in English, including the three areas, without it.

 

혹시, 읽기 보다는 듣기가 영어 학습에 훨씬 더 효과적이지 않을까? 라고 생각할 수도 있지만,
듣기는 읽기에 비해 두 가지 분명한 약점이 있다.

You might think that listening is much more effective than reading when it comes to learning English,
but it has two distinct weaknesses compared to reading.

 

첫 번째 약점은 속도이다.
간단하게 말하자면, 스스로를 영어를 배우고자 하는 인공지능이라고 상상했을 때,
당신은 원하는 만큼의 빠른 속도로 뭔가를 읽으면서 정보를 모으고 배울 수 있다.  
이와는 반대로 듣기의 경우, 읽기만큼 원하는 대로 속도를 조정할 수가 없어서,
듣기가 읽기보다 지식을 얻는 것은 말할 필요도 없이, 정보 습득도 비효율적이다.

The first is speed.
To put it simply, just imagine yourself as an AI (Artificial Intelligence) trying to learn English,
you can gather information and learn it all at a speed as fast as you wish by reading something.
On the contrary, you cannot really listen to something as freely as you read it,
which makes collecting information, not to mention gaining knowledge, through listening less effective than through reading.

 

듣기의 두 번째 약점은 아주 근본적인 사실이다.
글로 쓰여진 내용을 이해 못하는데, 같은 내용을 듣고 이해할 수 있나? 그건 불가능하다.
게다가, 읽기와 듣기가 언어에서 입력 역할을 한다는 걸 고려하면, 출력 역할을 하는 쓰기와 말하기는 어떻게 될 것 같은가?

The second weakness of listening comes from a very basic fact.
How can you understand a speech if you cannot even understand it in a written form? It’s impossible.  
Moreover, considering reading and listening act as an input for a language,
what would happen to writing and speaking, an output of a language?

 

분명히, 읽기에 대한 확고한 기초가 없다면, 듣기, 말하기, 쓰기 중 어떤 것도 나아질 수 없다.
그러니 제발 영어로 된, 또는 배우고자 하는 언어로  읽기를 많이 해주시라!

Clearly, none of your listening, speaking and writing will become better without your firm foundation on reading.
Thus, please read a lot in English or any language you wish to acquire.
