영어단어 책을 더 사기 전에 고려해야 할 것들

Things You Have To Consider Before Buying Your Next English Vocabulary Book

Today, I suddenly remember an incident related to choosing a good English vocabulary book.

A few years ago, I saw an advertisement on a new series of English vocabulary books written

by a professor and author.

Those books were advertised widely and were praised by lots of readers, along with its publisher.

오늘 저는 갑자기 좋은 영어단어 책을 고르는 것과 관련된 일을 하나 기억했습니다.

몇 년 전에, 한 교수님이 저자인 영어단어 책 시리즈에 대한 광고를 본적이 있습니다.

그 책들은 널리 광고되고 있었고 출판사를 포함해서, 많은 독자들이 그 책을 칭송하고 있었습니다.

 

One of the marketing points of the books was the word lists of those books

which were acclaimed for properly meeting the needs of their target readers

depending on their fluency level in English.

Being curious about those lists and the books themselves, I went to one of Kyobobooks stores,

picked up the books, and started scanning them.

Yet, I found them quite disappointing despite their good word lists

since they, above all, lacked example sentences.

그 책들의 마케팅 요점은 타겟 독자층의 영어능력 수준에 따른 필요를 제대로 맞춰주었다는

찬사를 받는 단어 목록이었습니다.

그 리스트 및 책 자체에 대한 궁금증이 생겨서, 교보문고 지점 중 하나를 찾아가서,

책을 잡아들고 훑어보기 시작했습니다.

그러나, 좋은 단어 목록에도 불구하고, 그 책들은 제게 실망스러웠는데,

무엇보다도 그 책들엔 예문들이 없었기 때문입니다.  

 

Recalling the incident, I think it better to make a checklist before buying a new English vocabulary book

1. The list of vocabularies: You should know approximately from forty to fifty percent of the words listed.

If you don’t know less than that much, it is highly likely that you’ll throw the book away

soon after a few weeks’ struggle.

2. Meaning of the vocabulary both in Korean & English: If you only read or memorize Korean meaning

of an English word, you might end up using the word awkwardly. (Here, Korean means one's native language.)

3. Examples sentences: You need to know how the specific word is used in a sentence or sentences.

4. Phonetic symbols: You should know how to pronounce each vocabulary you study.

5. Audio files: You can pronounce the words in your book more precisely the book offers audio files.

6. Reader-friendly layout: You have to purchase a book that is comfortable for you to read repeatedly.

그 일을 회상해보다가, 새로운 단어책을 사기 전에 고려해야 할 체크리스트를 만드는 것이 좋겠다는 생각을 했습니다.

1. 단어목록: 적어도 단어책에 나오는 단어들 중 대략 40%~50% 정도의 단어를 알아야 합니다.  

그 책에 나온 단어들을 그만큼 모르신다면, 몇 주 정도 애쓰신 다음에 그 책을 던져 버릴 가능성이 높습니다.

2. 각 단어의 한글 및 영어 의미: 만약에 단어와 그 단어의 한국어 뜻만 외우신다면,

결국 그 단어를 이상하게 사용하게 되실 수 있습니다. (여기서 한국어는 모국어를 말합니다.) 

3. 예문: 실제로 특정 단어가 예문(들)에서 어떻게 쓰이는지를 알아야 합니다.

4. 발음기호: 각각의 단어가 어떻게 발음되는지 알아야 합니다. 

5. 오디오파일: 책이 오디오파일을 제공한다면 거기에 수록된 단어들을 더욱 더 정확하게 발음할 수 있습니다.

6. 독자가 읽기 편한 레이아웃: 반복해서 읽는 게 편한 책을 사야 합니다.   

 

Actually, from the checklist above components no. 1 to 4 are really essential and fundamental to me.

The component no.5 is really beneficial if it is included in the book

and the last component no. 6 is the icing on the cake if it suits the reader.

사실, 위에 있는 체크리스트 중에서 1~4번 요소들은 정말 제게는 필수적이고 근본적인 것들 입니다.

5번 요소는 책에 포함된다면, 정말 유익할거고 마지막 6번째 요소는 독자에게 맞는다면 금상첨화입니다.

 

The checklist above illustrates what I think really necessary for a good English vocabulary book to have.

Yet, it is not the absolute checklist for everyone, but I think it can give you some tips for you to consider

for your next English vocabulary book (or even books).

위에 나와있는 체크리스트는 제가 생각하기에, 좋은 영어단어 책에 꼭 필요한 것입니다.

그러나, 모두를 위한 완벽한 리스트는 아닙니다만, 여러분들이 영어단어 책(또는 책들)을

더 사실 때 약간의 팁을 드릴 수는 있을 거라고 생각합니다.
