This phrasal verb, “look forward to ~,” is very frequently used.

“look forward to ~”라는 구동사는 상당히 빈번하게 사용됩니다.

 

I bet most of you already know that it means,

Yet, there’s one thing all of you should beware about this phrasal verb.

그런데, 이 구동사에 관련해서 여러분들이 꼭 아셔야만 할 것이 있습니다.

 

The “to” in “look forward to ~” is not a “to infinitive” but a “preposition.”

“look forward to~”의 “to”는 “to부정사”의 to가 아니고 “전치사”입니다.

 

That means you have to put a sentence element acting as a noun

after the preposition “to (a preposition)” of “look forward to ~.”

즉, “look forward to~”의 “to (전치사)”뒤에는 명사역할을 하는

문장 구성요소가 들어와야 합니다.  

 

Then, one question emerges, “what would you do if you want to add a verb

in order to depict an action, condition, or experience when using the phrasal verb look forward to~?”

그럼, “look forward to~를 사용할 때 만약 어떤 행동, 상황 또는 경험을 묘사하고자 동사를 넣어야 한다면

The answer to the aforementioned question is a bit tricky

since you cannot use a “to infinitive” after a preposition

(here, as indicated above, “to” in “look forward to~.” is a preposition).

“look forward to (V-ing)”는 직역하면 “~하는 것을 기쁘게 또는 열렬한 열망으로 기대하다”라는 의미입니다.

영한 사전에는 “~하기를 고대하다/기대하다/즐거운 마음으로 기다리다”라는 뜻으로 나와 있습니다.

[CF.] The phrasal verb, “look forward to ~” [especially “look forward to (V-ing)”]

can be used at the end of formal letter in order to indicate your hope of seeing

or hearing from the person who receives the letter.

Also, you can express what you want from the receiver of the letter by using this phrasal verb.

[참고] 구동사 “look forward to ~ [특히 look forward to V-ing]”는 격식을 차린 편지 말미에

그 편지를 받게 될 사람을 만나거나 그로부터 소식을 듣고 싶다는
