get owned & sit well with
드물긴 하지만 운 좋게 잘 모르는 구 동사 2개를 한 문장에서 만나볼 때가 있습니다.
다음 문장이 그런 경우였죠.
There are a few lucky moments that I come across a sentence with two unfamiliar phrasal verbs.
The following sentence was one of them:
2019년 1월 25일자 뉴욕 타임즈의 “트럼프의 셧다운은 잔인한 농담이었다” 라는 사설에서 나온 문장입니다.
(이 문장의 뜻은 게시글의 끝 부분에 써놓겠습니다.)
“Of course, the new narrative—that Mr. Trump got owned by Ms. Pelosi—isn’t
likely to sit well with him, either. (from the editorial “Trump’s Shutdown Was a Cruel Joke,”
The New York Times, published on Jan. 25, 2019)”
요지는 알겠지만, “get owned” 와 “sit well with”라는 두 개의 구 동사 때문에,
이 문장의 정확한 의미를 이해하지는 못한 것 같은 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서, 사전을 찾았죠.
I got the gist, but I didn’t think I understand the meaning precisely due to
those two phrasal verbs: First, “get owned,” and second, “sit well with.”
Thus, I looked them up in the dictionary.
첫 번째로, “get owned”는 속어인데, “놀림을 당하다,” “굴욕을 당하다”,
또는 “게임에 지다.” 라는 의미이죠. 그렇다면, 위의 문장에서는 “굴욕을 당하다”
또는 “게임에 지다” 쪽이 좋겠습니다. (네이버 온라인 영어사전에 따르면 “당하다” 나 “망하다” 라고
되어 있습니다. 한국어로는 그쪽이 더 좋을 것 같습니다)
First, the phrasal verb “get owned” is a slang meaning “to be made a fool of”, “to be humiliated”,
or “lose a game.” Thus, with the above sentence, “to be humiliated” or “lose a game” would be better.
(According to the Naver online English Dictionary, its Korean meaning is
“be ruined,” or “be screwed up.” I believe they go better with Korean.)
그렇다면, 두 번째 “sit well with”는 아마도 “~을 인정하거나 받아들이기 어렵다” 일 것 같네요.
꽤 괜찮은 추측(지식을 갖고 하는 추측)인 것 같지만, 잘 모르는 두 개의 구 동사를 한 문장에서 만다는 건
일석이조(새들에게 유감은 없습니다만)의 효과를 얻을 수 있는 드문 기회이니까요...
Then, the second one, “sit well with,” might be likely to mean “is hard for to admit or accept ~.”
This sounds like a good educated guess, but having two unfamiliar phrasal verbs in one sentence is
a quite rare luck to go for the effect of killing two birds—no offense to birds—with one stone.
그래서 “sit well with”를 찾아 봤습니다. “~에게 받아들여지는[용인되는]”이라는 의미네요.
음.. 추측이 맞았네요. 그렇다면 위에 나온 문장은 “분명히, Mr. Trump는 Ms. Pelosi에게
굴욕을 당했다(그냥 ‘당했다’나 “망했다” 도 좋을 것 같아요)는 새로운 이야기
역시 인정할 수 없을 것이다.” 라는 내용으로 이해하시면 됩니다.
Thus, I search for the meaning of “sit well with.” It means “to be acceptable to~.”
Well, my guess is quite good. Then, the above-mentioned sentence can be understood that
“Certainly, Mr. Trump cannot swallow (= accept) to the new description that he was humiliated
(just "be ruined" or "be screwed up" are also good) by Ms. Pelosi, either.”
“get owned”의 의미는 “WordReferenceForums”에서 “sit well with”는
“thefreedictionary.com”에서 그리고 한국어 뜻은 모두 “endic.naver.com”에서 가져왔습니다.
