Gov. Ron DeSantis urges Floridians to abide by beach closure orders.

That's the message Gov. Ron DeSantis is sending people

who aren't following beach closure orders throughout the state of Florida.

"I think you have another class of people who are just selfish,"

the governor said at a news conference in The Villages on Monday.

"You have no beach and they go to a sandbar, which is technically not the beach."

DeSantis said residents who don't abide by the closures

and trade in beaches for sandbars are putting the public in danger.

"I would just say for those folks, you need to cool it and let's get through this,

"And I think if we take good action now, we're probably going to be better off,

even in the immediate short term."

Slight (명사)

I believe most of you are familiar with the slight as an adjective,

which means “small in size, degree, or amount.”

대다수의 사람들이 (크기, 정도, 또는 양이) 약간의, 조금,

이라는 의미의 형용사로서의 slight는 잘 알고 있을 것입니다.

Ex) There was a slight tremble in her voice as she recalled her husband.

However, the slight I am referring here is a noun. Quite surprising indeed!

그렇지만, 여기에서 제가 말하는 slight는 명사입니다. 정말 상당히 놀랍죠!

Yet, it is important to remind that a word in most languages

doesn’t’ have only one meaning and only one part of speech.

그렇지만, 대부분의 언어에서는 한 단어가 여러 가지 의미,

그리고 품사를 갖고 있다는 기억하는 게 중요합니다.

Now, let’s return to the topic, slight as a noun.

I encountered “slight” as a noun while reading a novel

“A History of The World in 10 1/2 Chapters” written by Julian Barnes.  

제가 명사로서의 slight는 줄리언 반스의 “10와 1/2 의 세계사 (직역)”를

읽던 중에 보게 되었습니다.

The meaning of slight as a noun is “an insult caused by a failure

to show someone proper respect or attention’.

For interpretation, it would be better to interpret “slight”

as (intentional) disrespect or affront as online Daum dictionary refers.  

(kindle app에 기본적으로 주어지는 사전에 따르면) 명사인 slight의 의미는

“누군가에게 적절한 존중이나 관심을 보여주지 않음으로써 가해지는 모욕이나 무례” 입니다.

번역을 위해서는 다음 온라인 사전이 말하듯이 (의식적/의도적인) 무례 또는 모욕이라고

보는 쪽이 더 낫겠네요.

Roger Federer Will Always Be the Greatest (Even if He’s Not)

로저 페더러는 언제나 최고일 것이다 (비록 그가 최고가 아닐지라도)

This post is based on an article from the New York Times on Jan, 19, 2020,

with the above-mentioned title, written by Michael Steinberger.

이 게시물은 Michael Steinberger가 2020년 1월 19일에 뉴욕타임스에

기고한 같은 제목의 기사에 근거한 것입니다.

Roger Federer, the 38-year-old tennis player, has owned the record of

20 Grand Slam singles titles

and he is ranked third (as Jan 19, 2020).

Although he is still capable of winning any tournament,

this year might be his last as a professional player.

Considering this, the biggest thing that bothers his loyal fans is

that his record of 20 major titles can be broken

by other two strong contenders younger than him,

namely Rafael Nadal (with 19 major titles), and Novak Djokovic (with 16).

38살의 테니스 선수인 로저 페더러는 그랜드 슬럼 20회 우승기록을 갖고 있고

2020년 1월 19일 현재 세계 3위이다.

아직까지도 그는 어떤 대회에서든 우승할 수 있지만,

이런 점을 고려할 때 페더러의 열성적인 팬들이 가장 신경 쓰는 것은

If one of them (possibly all of them) indeed wins more than 20 titles,

Federer will not be “the greatest male tennis player of all the time.”

Even Federer himself said that Nadal and Novak would win more

and it would be OK to him because in a sport what matters is numbers

in an interview with the Associated Press.

Yet, Federer enthusiasts find it hard to swallow that.

Faithful Federer fans and the author (one of them) cannot really accept

such a simplification of putting everything in numbers in sports.

According to the author (and many of Federer fans including myself),

there are somethings the numbers cannot tell and

one of the certain things among them is the beauty of tennis

which only Federer can convey with his play throughout the history of tennis.

Frankly, I cannot deny that my paraphrasing of this article

is done with much more enthusiasm for Roger Federer that the original article.

I cannot forget the grace and beauty of his play,

especially at the height of his career.

I still do believe his heyday is not over yet.

솔직히 원래 기사보다 더 Roger Federer에 대한 열의를 갖고 다른 말로 표현했다.

최전성기 때 그의 플레이의 우아함과 아름다움은 잊을 수가 없다.
