Most of you are familiar with “steep” as an adjective,

which means “precipitous; at a rapid or precipitous rate; or excessive”

여러분 대부분은 “가파른; 급격한; 너무 비싼/극단적인”이란 의미를 가진

형용사인 “steep”에 익숙하실 겁니다.

Yet, “steep” is also a verb and it means “to soak in water or other liquid;

(usually passive) to saturate or imbue.”

그러나 “steep”은 동사이기도 합니다. 동사인 “steep”의 의미는

“(물 또는 다른 액체에) 적시다/담그다; 깊이 스며들게 하다, 열중/몰두시키다.”입니다.

In this post, I’m going to discuss two phrasal verbs with the verb, “steep”:

One is “steep sth (something) in sth (something)“and the other is “steep sb (somebody) in sth (something).”

이 게시물에서는 동사인 steep과 함께 나오는 구동사 두 가지를 다룰 예정입니다:

하나는 “steep sth (something) in sth (something)” 그리고 다른 하나는

“steep sb (somebody)” in sth (something).”입니다.

 

1. steep sth (something) in sth (something): to soak something in liquid

(뭔가)을/를 (액체)에 담가두다  

[Note that the second something should be liquid. 두 번째 something은 액체여야 합니다.]

 

You have to steep these herbs in steamy hot water for five minutes.

이 허브들은 김이 나는 따뜻한 물에 5분동안 담가두어야 한다.

Steep clothing in cold water 15 minutes, and wash with general synthetic detergent.

옷을 찬물에 15분 동안 담가두고 일반합성세제로 세탁해라.

You can steep tea leaves in cold water and still extract the same flavor,

but it works much quicker with hot water.

or other experience; to saturate someone with some kind of experience or training

(어떤 사람)을/를 어떤 경험이나 훈련에 푹 빠지다/ 빠져 지내다/빠지게 하다

 

Her parents steeped her in good literature and music.

그녀의 부모님들을 그녀가 좋은 문학과 음악에 푹 빠지게 했다.
