When you read the word, "cold turkey," you might think it quite weird.

Since turkey is not a particularly low-temperature bird,

you would guess I mean refrigerated or frozen turkey meat.

Well, to avoid more confusion,

please let me tell you how I actually came across with this word. 

음, 혼동을 피하기 위해,

제가 이 단어를 어디서 보게 되었는지 말씀 드릴게요.

 

When I watched the 9th episode of Boston Legal Season 1,

a US TV series, I heard the word “cold turkey” twice.  

미국 드라마인 “Boston Legal” 첫 번째 시즌의 9번째 에피소드에서

저는 “cold turkey”라는 단어를 두 번 들었습니다.

 

Let me explain the context of the conversation containing “cold turkey” to you.

Marybeth Hewitt was a stage II diabetic

and was selected to participate in a clinical trial of SV 113, an antidiabetic.

Thus, she sued the pharmaceutical company to

let her participate in the clinical trial again.

and Alan Shore (the defense counsel and the main character of the Boston Legal) in the court,

Do you notice that Alan uttered “cold turkey”

when he pointed out the plaintiff’s abrupt and perfect stop of smoking?

Smoking cigarettes makes you become addicted to nicotine,

a main addictive chemical in tobacco.

흡연을 하면 담배에 들어있는 주된 중독물질인 니코틴에 중독됩니다.

 

Nicotine affects your brain so that your level of stress and want of cigarettes

respond to the amount of nicotine in your brain.

니코틴은 뇌에 영향을 끼쳐서 당신의 스트레스 레벨과 담배에 대한 욕구는

Hence, when a regular smoker tries to quit smoking,

he/she end up suffering from withdrawal symptoms

such as depression or poor concentration, not to mention a strong urge to smoke.

그러다 보니, 주기적인 흡연자가 금연을 하려고 하면,

흡연에 대한 강한 욕구 및 집중력 저하 그리고 우울증 같은 금단증상으로 고통 받게 됩니다.

 

This is why quitting smoking is usually a very difficult and long process.

이래서 금연을 하는 것은 흔히 매우 어렵고, 긴 과정입니다.  .

 

Yet, the plaintiff of Alan’s case insisted she quitted smoking at once,

which was hardly believable considering that she had usually smoked two packs a day.

그러나, Alan이 맡은 사건의 원고(Marybeth)는 즉시 금연을 했다고 주장했는데요,
