Readers: “What? Don’t you think we all know the word, handout?”

독자들: “뭐라고? 우리가 handout이란 단어를 모른다고 생각하는 거야?”

어떤 연설, 강의, 또는 모임에 참여한 사람들에게 주어지는 종이(들)[유인물]을 말하는 거 아냐?

Now, let’s discuss the two other meanings of handout here, except the meaning introduced above.

이제, 위에서 설명된 handout의 의미 [유인물] 말고,

제가 소개하고자 하는 handout의 또 다른 두 개의 의미를 알아 봅시다.

 

handout: 1. food, money or clothes that are given to a person who is poor;

2. money that is given to a person or an organization by the government, etc.,

for example to encourage commercial activity

직역하면, handout의 첫 번째 뜻은 “가난한 사람에게 주어지는 음식, 돈, 또는 의류”이고요,

두 번째 뜻은 정부 등이, 예를 들면 상업활동을 장려하기 위해. 사람이나 단체에게 주는 돈” 입니다.

The term handout, with those two meanings, is often used to express disapproval.

그 두 가지 의미의 handout은 흔히 못마땅함을 나타내는데 사용되고 있습니다.

두 번째 의미는 “(정부 등에서 주는) 지원금”입니다.

Let’s explore some example sentences of handout with each of the two meanings introduced above.

This is not socialism, nor taxing the rich to provide handouts for the poor.

The best bet for poor countries is to reply on one simple idea:

When markets are free and the incentives are right, people can find ways to solve their problems.

They do not need handouts from foreigners or from their own governments.
