Before discussing “in jeopardy,” let’s talk about “Jeopardy,” a very popular TV quiz show

in the US.

“in jeopardy”에 대해 얘기하기 전에, 미국에서 굉장히 인기 있었던 TV 퀴즈쇼

“Jeopardy”에 대해 얘기해 봅시다.

In Jeopardy, all three contestants in an episode of the show earned money

by offering a correct answer to a presented quiz.

“Jepordy”에서는, 한 회에 등장하는 3명의 참가자 전원이 주어진 문제에

정답을 맞추면 돈을 벌게 됩니다.  

The show’s last round, the Final Jeopardy” asked every contestant to bet on a random amount of money

out of the sum that he/she had collected before the final question.

“Final Jeopardy”라는 그 쇼의 마지막 라운드에서 모든 참가자들은 마지막 문제를 풀기 전까지

모았던 돈 중에서 임의의 금액을 걸게 됩니다.

It a contestant offered the right answer for the last question,

he/she earned the money on which he/she bet and lost it if his/her gave the wrong answer.

만약에 마지막 질문에 참가자가 정답을 말하면 그 사람은 자신이 걸었던 액수의 돈을 갖게 되고,

오답을 말하면 그 액수만큼 돈이 차감됩니다.

The catch was that the one who earned the most money was the winner of an episode of the quiz show

regardless of how he/she answered the last question.

One could earn the money even if he/she was wrong about the last answer by betting on little money

as long as he/she had earned the most money up until the last question.

주목할 점은 마지막 질문에 어떤 대답을 했건 각 회차에서 승자는

돈을 가장 많이 벌어들인 사람이라는 것입니다.

마지막 질문을 틀렸다고 해도, 마지막 질문까지 돈을 많이 벌고

마지막 질문에 돈을 아주 약간만 걸었다면 승자가 될 수 있습니다.  

Putting a lot of (or sometimes all) your money in jeopardy of losing it

is the way you can win the show Jeopardy.

당신이 스스로를 많은(또는 모든) 돈을 잃을 위험에 빠지게 만드는 것이

퀴즈쇼 “Jeopardy”에서 이길 수 있는 방법입니다.

In other words, you force yourself to bear the danger of losing a lot of (or even all of) your money

in order to win the game.

다시 말하자면, 게임에서 이기기 위해 당신은 스스로 많은(또는 모든)돈을 잃을 위험을 감수하는 것입니다.

That is one of the reasons why the show was called Jeopardy, which means danger.   

그것이 그 쇼가 위험이라는 의미의 “Jeopardy”라고 명명된 이유입니다.
