Let's talk about the word, faculty, with a rather unfamiliar meaning to us. 

우리에게 약간은 덜 익숙한 의미를 가진 faculty에 대해 알아봅시다!

 

Most of us are familiar with the word faculty as “the teachers and instructors of a school or college.”

Yet, the faculty I’d like to discuss here means “a natural ability for a particular kind of action.”

우리 대부분은 “교직원/교수진”이라는 의미의 faculty를 잘 알고 있습니다.

그렇지만, 오늘 제가 여기서 논할 faculty는 “특정한 종류의 활동에 대한 자연적인 능력”을 말합니다.

영한사전에 따르면 “(사람이 타고나는 신체적, 정신적) 능력[기능]”입니다.

Stephen King churns out a lot of crap, but has a terrific faculty for storytelling.

I enjoyed the hell out of this novel and was pleasantly surprised to see

that King still has the ability to be excellent, even after all these years.

If there is no one right answer in economics, then we cannot leave it to the experts alone.

This means that every responsible citizen needs to learn some economics.

By this I don’t mean picking up a thick textbook and absorbing one particular economic point of view.

What is needed is to learn economics in such a way that  one becomes aware of

different types of economic arguments and develops the critical faculty to judge

which argument makes most sense  in a given economic circumstance

and in light of which moral values and political goals

(note that I am not saying ‘which argument is correct’).

만약 경제학에 하나의 정답이 존재하지 않는다면, 우리는 전문가들에게만 경제학을 맡겨놓을 수 없다.

이것은 모든 책임 있는 시민은 경제학을 약간은 배워야 한다는 것을 의미한다.

이런 나의 주장은 두꺼운 경제학 교과서를 고르거나 특정한 하나의 경제적 의견을 받아들이라는 것이 아니다.

우리에게 필요한 것은 개개인이 다른 종류의 경제적인 논쟁을 알아차리고

어떤 논쟁이 주어진 상황에서 도덕적인 가치와 정치적인 목표를 고려해서

(내가 ‘어떤 논쟁이 옳은지’라고 말하지 않는다는 점에 주목하시라) 가장 타당한지를

판단할 수 있는 비판적인 능력을 발달시키는 방식으로 경제학을 배우는 것이다.
