An “acid test” in literal meaning refers an acid test that is used to

examine the quality of any chemical, ore, or metal by using acid.

Historically, people used strong acid to separate gold from other metals

Like almost all synonyms, the figurative meaning of “acid test” is

not exactly the same as that of “litmus test.”
