What comes first in your mind when you see the word, “uncanny”?

“uncanny”라는 단어를 보면 제일 먼저 떠오르는 것이 무엇인가요?

 

In most cases, you would think of “uncanny valley”.

대부분의 경우, “uncanny valley (불쾌한 골짜기)”를 떠올리실 겁니다

 

Well, then…., let me talk a bit about uncanny valley.

그렇다면 uncanny valley (불쾌한 골짜기)를 잠시 다뤄봅시다.

 

When serious discussions about AI (Artificial Intelligence) emerged,

the word, “uncanny valley” also drew our attention.

AI (인공지능: Artificial Intelligence)에 관한 심각한 논의들이 생겨났을 때,

uncanny valley (불쾌한 골짜기)라는 단어 또한 우리의 주의를 끌게 되었죠.

Originally a theory in aesthetics, uncanny valley deals with a relationship

between the level of an object’s likeliness to a human and psychological reaction to that object.

원래 미학(美學)이론인 uncanny valley (불쾌한 골짜기)는 물체의 인간에 대한 유사성의 정도와

그 물체에 대한 심리적 반응 간의 관계를 다룹니다.

This theory implies that humanoid objects with imperfect resemblance to real human beings

evoke uncanny or oddly common feelings of strangeness and repugnance in viewers.

이 이론은 진짜 인간과 완벽하게 같지 않은 인간과 비슷한 물체가 보는 사람에게 공통적으로

묘하거나 이상한 이질감이나 혐오를 불러일으킨다는 것을 암시한다.

Hence, the uncanny valley phenomenon can be explained as a creepy

and distressful feeling that a person experience when he/she encounters

quite-similar-but-not-perfectly-human robots or characters produced by computers.

그러므로, uncanny valley (불쾌한 골짜기) 현상이라는 것은  사람이

인간과 상당히 흡사하나 완전히 인간은 아닌 로봇이나 컴퓨터에 의해 만들어진 캐릭터를 마주칠 때

느끼는 기이하거나 불쾌한 감정으로 설명될 수 있다.

Now, it’s time to turn our attention to uncanny, an adjective!

이제, 형용사인 uncanny로 주의를 돌려 봅시다!

 

uncanny (adj.): 1. characterized by apparently supernatural wonder, horror, etc.;

2. beyond what is normal or expected”

uncanny는 직역하면 “1. 명백하게 초자연적인 놀라움, 공포 등의 특징을 가진;

2. 정상적이거나 예상되는 것을 넘어선”이라는 의미입니다.

영한사전을 찾아보면 “1. 으스스한, 무시무시한, 초자연적인, 기묘한;”

“2. 불가사의한, 신비로운, 신기한”의 의미입니다.

Before we delve into the word, uncanny, it would be better to look at the root of this word.

uncanny를 좀더 탐구하기 전에, 이 단어의 어원을 살펴보는 게 좋겠네요.  

 

Actually, canny stems from the Anglo-Saxon root ken,

which means “knowledge, understanding, or cognizance; mental perception,”

e.g. an idea beyond one’s ken

사실, canny는 앵글로-색슨 어원인 ken 에서 비롯되었고요,

ken의 의미는 “지식, 이해, 또는 인지; 정신적인 지각”입니다.

예를 들면 an idea beyond one’s ken은 “한 사람의 지식을 넘어선 생각” 이란 의미입니다.  

Also, do not forget un-, which refers not in this case. Refer: un-(not)+ canny

(think about the meaning of the root, ken).   

그리고, un-을 잊지 말아주셔요. 여기에서un-은 “~이 아닌”이라는 의미입니다.

un-의 의미와 합쳐진canny (ken의 의미를 생각해주셔요)입니다.
