Today’s Sentences

I have never squandered an opportunity to read.

There are only twenty-four hours in the day, seven of which are spent sleeping,

and in my view at least four of the remaining seventeen must be devoted to reading.

Of course, four hours a day does not provide me with

nearly enough time to satisfy my appetite.

나는 절대로 책을 읽을 기회를 낭비한 적이 없다.

하루는 겨우 24시간이고, 그 중에 7시간은 잠자는데 사용되는데,

난 그 남은 17시간 중 최소한 4시간은 독서에 전념해야 한다고 생각한다.

물론, 하루에 4시간은 독서에 대한 나의 욕구를 만족시켜주기엔 턱없이 모자라는 시간이다.

Frankly, I wanted to choose a single sentence

for the first posting of this “Paraphrasing” category.

솔직히, “Paraphrasing” 카테고리의 첫 번째 게시물로는

문장 1개만 선택하려고 했는데요.

 

Yet, when I re-read the above three sentences, I just wanted to pick them.

그러나, 위의 세 문장들을 다시 읽었을 때, 왠지 고르고 싶었습니다.

 

In order not to make you confused with more than one sentence,

I believe it better to paraphrase each of the above sentences,

for doing so will help you arrange all paraphrasing ideas

into a wider variety of sentences. 

한 개가 넘는 문장으로 여러분들께 혼란을 주고 싶지 않아서,

문장을 한 개씩 paraphrasing 해보기로 했습니다,

그러면 paraphrasing 된 문장들을 더 다양한 종류로 쓰실 수 있을 겁니다.

 

 

Today’s 1st Sentence

I have never squandered an opportunity to read.

나는 절대로 책을 읽을 기회를 낭비한 적이 없다

 

Paraphrasing the 1st Sentence

1. I haven’t missed/wasted any chance to read.

→ I just use synonyms of the sample sentence,

which seems the simplest and easiest way to paraphrase.

At first, I relied too much on synonyms and I even felt angry

when teachers told me to think about changing

the structures of the original sentences instead of synonyms,

for I had no idea how to do that.   

→ Paraphrase를 하는 가장 간단하고 쉬운 방법인 동의어를 썼습니다.

저는 처음에 동의어에 엄청 의존해서 선생님이 동의어 말고

원래 문장의 구조를 바꿔보는 걸 생각해보라고 하셨을 때

어떻게 해야 하는지 몰라서 화를 내기도 했습니다.  

 

2. I’ve always appreciated and taken even the slightest chance to read. 

→ With this paraphrasing, I change a negative expression to a positive one.

Often, changing from the positive to negative, or vice versa,

is a quite effective way to paraphrasing.

→ 여기서는, 부정적인 표현을 긍정적인 것으로 바꿨습니다.

흔히 긍정적인 것을 부정적인 것으로 또는 그 반대로 하는 것이

paraphrasing을 하는 데 상당히 효과적입니다.

 

3. I have always read whenever opportunity arises/knocks.

→ This one is also a shift of perspective with a bit more descriptive

on “opportunity” from the sample sentence by making it as a clause.

→ 이것 역시도 관점을 바꿔본 문장인데요

예시 문장의 “opportunity”를 좀 더 묘사적으로 표현했습니다.

 

4. If there’s any chance to read, I have never failed to take it.

→ Like sentence No. 3, the word “opportunity” is changed into a clause

and a negative word “squandered” is shifted to a phrase,

“failed to take it (= any chance to read).”

→ 3번 문장처럼, “opportunity”를 절(주어+동사가 있는 구조)로 바꿨고

“squandered”라는 부정적인 단어를 구(주어+동사가 없는 두 개 이상의 단어)인

“failed to take it (= any chance to read).”로 바꿨습니다.

 

5. I have always strived/struggled to grasp any chance of reading if it emerges.

→ This sentence might be a stretch.

It seems not much strong compared to the sample sentence,

but the two words, “always” and “any’,” can make up for the seemingly weak tone.

→ 이 문장은 약간 무리하게 쓴 것처럼 보일 수 있는데요. 

예시 문장에 비하면 강력해 보이지 않을 수 있습니다만.

“always”와 “any”라는 두 단어가 짐짓 약해 보이는 어조를 보완합니다.

 

 

Today’s 2nd Sentence

There are only twenty-four hours in the day, seven of which are spent sleeping,

and in my view at least four of the remaining seventeen must be devoted to reading.

하루는 겨우 24시간이고, 그 중에 7시간은 잠자는데 사용되는데,

난 그 남은 17시간 중 최소한 4시간은 독서에 전념해야 한다고 생각한다

 

Paraphrasing the 2nd Sentence

1. Nobody has more than the mere twenty-four hour per day

and every human being sleeps seven hours out of them.

In my opinion, all people should read the minimum of four hour in our waking hours. 

→ Don’t be afraid to write more than one sentence

when you paraphrase a sample sentence.

I just change “there + be + noun” clause to “nobody + has” clause.

I think the second sentence (in my opinion ~hours) is quite straightforward.    

→  예시 문장 한 개를 paraphrasing 할 때, 반드시 한 개의 문장으로 바꿔서 쓰라는 법은 없습니다.

“there + be + 명사”절(주어+동사가 있는 구조)를 “nobody + has”절로 바꿨습니다.

두 번째 문장 (in my opinion ~ hours)은 상당히 간단합니다.

 

2. Of all the 24 hours per day, people have to sleep seven hours.

While people are awake for 17 hours, I believe

they should dedicate no less than four hours to reading.

→ Like the No. 1 sentence, I also use the verb, “have,”

and I begin the first sentence with a preposition phrase (Of ~ day).

For the second sentence, I use an adverb clause (While ~hours),

and there are changes of words in both sentences. .

→ No 1 문장처럼, “have”동사를 사용했고,

첫 번째 문장을 전치사구 (Of ~ day)로 시작했습니다.

두 번째 문장에서는 부사절 (While ~ hours)을 사용했고,

두 문장 모두에서 바뀐 단어들이 있습니다.

 

3. Out of 24 hours a day and apart from 7 hours of sleep,

the mere 4 hours are what I think the bare minimum hours

for people to invest in reading within the remaining 17 hours.

→ Considering the number of sentences, this one looks nice,

but it seems a bit too long.

I start the sentence with preposition phrase (Out of ~ sleep)

and I use a noun clause (what~ hours) as a complement of be verb,

which makes the entire sentence so-called type 2 in Korean English grammar.

Also, there are some changes of structure such as a clause to a phrase and vice versa. 

→ 문장의 개수라는 점에서 볼 때, 이 문장은 약간 길어 보이지만

예시 문장과 개수가 같습니다.

전치사구(Out of ~ sleep)로 문장을 시작했고,

명사절(what ~ hours)을 be 동사의 보어로 사용했습니다.

이 문장 전체는 한국 영문법의 2형식이 되겠네요.    

 

4. With 24 hours minus 7 hours of sleep,

we are awake for only 17 hours per day and, among those hours,

I think the minimum hours of daily reading for anyone should be four hours. 

→ Like the sentence No. 3, I begin the sentence with preposition phrase (With ~ sleep)

and I use the conjunction “and” in order to combine the two ensuing sentences.

→ No. 3 문장처럼 전치사구(With ~ sleep)로 문장을 시작했고,

뒤따르는 두 개의 문장을 and로 연결했습니다.       

 

5. Having 24 hours a day and sleeping 7 hours out of them,

the mere 17 hours are what we get to lead a conscious life

and I believe the minimum of four hours in such a life

should be committed to reading.  

→ I used participial construction (Having ~ it) for this sentence and

the two sentences following it are connected with the conjunction

“and” like No.4 sentence.

→ 이 문장에서는 분사구문 (Having ~ it)을 사용했습니다.

이후 No. 4 문장처럼 두 문장이 “and”로 연결되어 있습니다.

 

 

Today’s 3rd Sentence

Of course, four hours a day does not provide me with

nearly enough time to satisfy my appetite.

물론, 하루에 4시간은 독서에 대한 나의 욕구를

만족시켜주기엔 턱없이 모자라는 시간이다. 

 

Paraphrasing the 3rd Sentence

1. Obviously, reading only four hours a day is never

an adequate time to satiate my thirst.

→ This paraphrased sentence is a quite straightforward.

I just change a phrasal verb (provide A with B) to be verb,

which also cause some changes of words.

→ 이 문장은 꽤나 간단합니다.

구동사인 (provide A with B)를 be 동사로 바꿨고,

그 결과로 단어들을 좀 바꾸었습니다.  

 

2. Clearly, the mere four hours per day is

a preposterously short time to satiate my desire.

→  Like sentence No 1, this is also quite clear.

I just use be verb and change some words.

→  No. 1 문장처럼, 상당히 분명합니다.

be 동사를 사용했고, 단어들을 몇 개 바꾸었습니다.

 

3. Certainly, four hours a day is too short for me

to become content with my craving for reading.  

→  I use the “too + adjective/adverb + to infinitive” structure

for the above sentence.

→  “too + 형용사/부사 + to 부정사” 구조를 썼습니다.

 

4. Indeed, the mere four hours of reading per day

makes me emotionally deprived of my longing.

→ I use the “make + objective + past participle” structure.

→ "make + 목적어 + 과거분사” 구조를 사용했습니다.

 

5. Surely, there’s no way for me to satiate my desire to read

with only four hours of reading a day.  

→ Instead of using “four hours” as a subjective,

I use “there + be verb + noun + to infinitive” structure

and “preposition with + noun phrase” structure.

→ "four hours”를 주어로 사용하는 대신,

“there + be 동사 + 명사 + to 부정사”구조와

“전치사 with + 명사구” 구조를 사용했습니다.  .

 

 

Please do not think the paraphrased sentences above are

the only possible options for the sample sentences.

예시 문장들을 paraphrasing 하는데 있어서

위에 제시된 문장들만이 가능한 옵션이라고 생각하시면 안됩니다.

There are a myriad of ways to paraphrase sentences

and I just post a very tiny bit of possible ways of paraphrasing.
