테드 창의 “바빌론의 탑”에 처음부터 반한 이유.

The Reason Why I Fell For Ted Chiang’s Tower of Babylon From the Very First.

 

다음은 테드 창이 쓴 바빌론의 탑의 문장 네 개짜리 첫 번째 문단이다.   
Below is the first paragraph comprised of four sentences from "Tower of Babylon" by Ted Chiang.

 

그 탑이 만약 시날(Shinar)의 평면을 가로질러 눕혀져 있는 거라면, 이틀 동안 걸어가야만
한 쪽 끝에서 다른 쪽 끝에 닿을 수 있었다.

“Were the tower to be laid down across the plain of Shinar, it would be two days’ journey
to walk from one end to the other.”

 

그러나, 탑은 수직으로 서 있기 때문에, 짐 없이 이동하는 사람이 탑의 맨 아래에서 정상으로
올라가는 데는 꼬박 한 달 반이 걸린다.

“While the tower stands, it takes a full month and a half to climb from its base to its summit,
if a man walks unburdened.”

 

하지만, 빈 손으로 탑을 올라가는 사람들은 거의 없고, 벽돌을 실은 손수레를 끌고
탑을 오르는 경우가 대부분이라, 탑을 오르는 속도는 느려질 수 밖에 없었다.   
“But few men climb the tower with empty hands; the pace of most men is slowed by the carts of bricks
that they pull behind them.”

벽돌 하나가 손수레에 실리고, 탑의 일부분이 되려고 수레에서 내려지는데 4개월이 걸렸다.

“Four months pass between the day a brick is loaded onto a cart,
and the day it is taken off to form a part of the tower.”

 

이 첫 문단을 읽고 난 이 단편 소설에 완전히 빠져 버렸다.
This first paragraph was what made me totally fall for this short story. 

첫 번째 문장에서 작가는 내 마음 속에 탑의 크기에 대한 선명한 이미지를 심어주었다.
그 탑이 평면적인 건물이라면 얼마나 넓을 것인지를.
From the first sentence, the author succeeded in imprinting a clear image of the tower’s size
to my mind. How wide it would be if were just a horizontal structure.

이후 작가는 그 탑을 그 자체로, 수직적인 건물로 보여준다.
하지만, 여전히 그 탑은 나에겐 약간은 추상적인 것, 상상 속에서 볼 수는 있으나,
단지 그것 뿐인.. 구경꾼으로서 보고 있는 것 같은 그런 존재이다.
Then he let me look at it  as it was—a vertical edifice.
Still, the tower was a thing somewhat abstract to me,
meaning that I could see the tower in my imagination,
but that was all—I was just an onlooker.

그러나 세 번째 문장에서 나는 그 탑을 명백한 실체로서 인식하기 시작했고,
탑의 정상에 다다르는 것이 얼마나 힘들 일인지를 느꼈다.
이 단락의 마지만 문장에서, 작가는 유려하게 탑의 정상까지의 여정이 얼마나 걸리는지를
수레에 실은 벽돌을 문장의 주어로 만들어 보여주는데, 정말 대단히 뛰어나고, 창의적인 발상이었다. 
However, with the third sentence, I started to perceive the tower as a tangible reality,
feeling how arduous it would be to climb up the tower.
An in the last sentence of this paragraph, the author eloquently depicts
the length of the journey to the tower’s top by presenting bricks as the subject of the sentence,
which was a definitely brilliant and creative idea.
